It's funny how similar Danish and Norwegian look in writing, yet they sound so different, you guys are almost singing ;)

Dialects can be tricky though (heck, a lot of Danes don't understand the one I used here, since it's so dissimilar to rigsdansk)

We only have one wtf dialect in Norway.. Songdal... My mom's bf is from there.. I still have no clue what he's saying.. and they've been dating a couple of years now.. ahem. I smiled when my Chinese-teacher explained some strange Chinese word with "kinda like they would say in Songdal".

I kinda envy Danish overuse of Æ.. But then again it's a bit of a retard letter x) I think I'd miss our famous gj, kj, and skj however.

Yeah, tone-wise Norwegian is up and down while Danish is flat - it fits the topography of the countries ;)

I've yet to have problems understanding Norwegians and Swedes, but I think I've just happened to come across people who speak the "standard" versions (or people from Skåne, whose Swedish is half Danish). I remember holidaying in Hordaland and Sogn og Fjordane with my parents once when I was a wee lad, but I can't recall encountering any horrific dialects

I've often heard that Danish is hard to learn for foreigners - I think it's the big difference between written and spoken Danish that throws people off, plus those lovely glottal stops that are all over the phonology

it's always amusing going to a.. um.. mountain.. thing.. for skiing.. "alpinanlegg", I have no clue what that is in English <<
and see a bunch of Danish adults in the kids (almost straight forward) slope.

Skånsk is just pure win though.
When I think about it.. They have somewhat the same tone as Songdals-dialect.
Maybe that's why you have less problems than me with it..?
I do usually have to ask people from Skåne, Songdal and outside København to slow down for me to understand.. And my mom's bf never slows down.. So I just go "what?" like 5 times, or I nod, smile and walk away... It's awkward when it's something I'm suppose to reply to though.
(Never liked the translation Copenhagen, never will. Merchantharbour - Now that would be something.)

XD I'd say Danes are excused for sucking at alpine-style skiing - the highest hills we have are only about 170 m above the surface of the sea, and covered in trees, thus unsuitable for ski training... and we rarely get much snow, either

I may have heard the Sogndal dialect back on that holiday, but I was probably too young to register it; I have no idea if I'd understand it if I heard it now
