I'd like to posit a third reason:
All of the "bad guys" plans were based on a simplistic understanding of physics and reality, yet at the same time were needlessly complicated, almost as if in an attempt to make up for the simplistic part.
Also, every one of them seemed to be a literal frumpy face.
