9/28/19: US395-The old welcome sign-it will go soon... (4/4)
As you have seen in the series of the "Welcome to NV Sign Series", I did go to US highway 395- if you look at it, it goes from California from Interstate 15 near San Diego, then goes all the way to the Canadian border near Laurier, Washington. It continues for a short time as BRITISH COLUMBIA 395 to its supreme terminus to windy BC Highway 3. It does serve Nevada so to give more access to Reno and Carson City, and eventually returns to Cali towards Susanville.
I happen to go through route in Nevada accidentally- I was going to pose for the sign at the northern end of Nevada, but SHOCKINGLY, AS OF NOW, THERE IS NO WELCOME SIGN! If you go to CA, there is one, but none for NV-the only way you can see if you're in NV is on the frontage road where you will see in green, "Washoe County Line." There was a turn-around about a mile after I crossed into CA (north), and I did turn back and saw the surprising thing that happened. . It was then that I did go to the CA/NV border for welcome sign at CA/NV88 to get the pictures, then I went on and gone to the southern end of US395 to get this one. (It can be possible that you can go southEAST to California as Reno is farther west than Los Angeles! )
Now I can see the reason why NV Department of Transportation (or Colloquially, N-DOT or NVDOT: https://www.nevadadot.com/ ) removed the northern welcome sign on this route- it would be this welcome sign on the northern section, and it is need of replacement, BUT N-DOT is taking a step further. In the news from N-DOT, they will make a welcome MONUMENT for both ends of US395 that they maintain. So this miner that you see is going to disappear in the sunset like the colors you see in the welcome sign. Really, you would see that in the west if you are lucky and drive on US 50 or I-80-the dusking sky looks beautiful, even with the clouds there.
I was able to also fufill bridging the gap- I did much earlier in my life go along CA SR4 to CA SR89. Then I went south to its southern terminus at US395 and went north-I then saw Topaz Lake until I came across this exact border. After a 1/4 mile, I turned back. I felt going along I-80 was FASTER than going along CA SR4&89 to get to Topaz Lake! I did not have plans here to enjoy Topaz Lake, but it was a great view.
There were many drivers beeping at me, and there was a child with his father looking at me happily posing with this sign and though they did not get a pic of the son and me, they said that seeing me pose this way made their day.
Just in time too- at the northern part, there was heavy rain near Reno, and when it was sunny here, as I was going north, there was a mix of snow and rain! Lucky, wasn't I?
Well, finished with NV, I will look at another state soon-maybe Arizona? But if the welcome to NV monument is nice, I will go ahead and go to 395 again and pose for it!
