Well, she's not omniscient. They're very good at picking up on things and the reason why will later be explained more conventionally but suffice it to say that their intuitions are USUALLY right. It's why their advice is so valuable and their counsel often heeded.
Besides, people do ask silly questions like that. ;)

Well now, Diana got a rather warmer welcome from the merfolk than I expected her too, especially considering the fear and mistrust they showed of surface folk at the beginning. Granted, there's still plenty of time for things to get ugly for her, but that they didn't attack her outright seems somewhat encouraging.
Meanwhile, Rhodes does seem to be in danger of falling for Harumi. Or at least getting more entangled with her than he probably expects. Given how little she knows of the surface world, that should certainly prove interesting. I'm quite curious to see more of her adventures above the water, too, and what, exactly, it is that will catch the eye of the oh so friendly Crimson Sun. But that's getting ahead of things I suppose.
I'm sorry it has taken me so very long to get back to this story, but it's really well done and it's certainly an interesting take on the whole idea of mermaids and what their civilization might look like. I'll try not to let another six months pass before I get the rest!

Well, the fact that she's a mermaid at the moment I'm sure has their curiosity piqued and certainly doesn't hurt.
When I was writing this it seemed Rhodes was the natural character to pair her with given Ethan was already focused on / devoted to Diana, and Lydia was more of a knowing companion, giving her a chance to display that signature Oracle prescience and preternatural awareness. It seemed to provide the most opportunity for relationship and character growth given how straight and logical Rhodes is compared to the others. Not to mention perhaps a little ironic given the hard time he gave Ethan for falling in love with Diana.
Writing Harumi's POV was interesting, I had to kind of put myself in the mindset of someone who doesn't know the words or functions for things like we do so it was a different exercise than I'm used to playing with.
I do appreciate it, overall I was pretty proud of this one and the overall flow of the project. Glad you liked it!
