Inktober Day 10 - "Pattern":

"I've seen a lot of things since coming to this world.
People with feathered wings who cannot fly, stars that walk and talk and pretend to live Mortal lives, Gods who have restaurants they patronize, people who walk through walls, animals that can hold conversations, a race of people who hatch from eggs, bones that animate to answer desperate cries. Not every one of these things has been beautiful, nor has every one of them have been ugly, but they have each been a wonder.
Few things can sit atop a list of wonder when you live in a world like Nodd. For me, the moment I fell in love, my first time flying with my own wings, the first time I touched a Starfallen, and the moment I got a Rifter to open for me sit in that spot.
A Rifter is a thing which learns a pattern through Magic and then replicates it. Each one does something different, and it's impossible to open one unless you're meant to own it.
I can't speak on what all Rifters do, or how they may be different from eachother, but mine, The Gaper, creates on you a reflection of what you give it. It allows you to see the world through another person's eyes, live their experience, and learn from it. Without it, my list of wonders would be much shorter.
I have collected, mostly against my will, several powerful Magical instruments in my time in Nodd, but the only one I can claim to love is The Gaper, and the patterns it weaves for me."
