||<<<PREVIOUS||FIRST||NEXT>>>||“Where have you been?!” the instructor stood looking down at the youngling, tapping his foot. The youngling was looking away unapologetically, more annoyed than anything. “Miss your morning lessons, now it’s as if you don’t care? What do you have to say for yourself?” he huffed angrily then sighed, “you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to. I worry about you, that’s all.”
The youngling huffed, getting up to leave. They were frustrated, they couldn’t even express to anyone what they were dealing with. They don’t even know where to begin, what is happening? Even if they could control it, what was it and why is no one telling them what it is? But… an idea comes to mind. The instructor doesn’t know, but they could help find out, right? They looked down trying to piece together on how to explain their experience, then looked to the instructor. They start tugging at their pant leg, “What is it?” He kneeled down to the youngling. They scratch at his arm, trying to do a drawing gesture. “Hmmm, I may have something for you,” he leaves the room for a moment to grab a blank scroll and an ink pen. “Is this what you needed?” without hesitation, the youngling jumped up and down excitedly pawing at the scroll and pen. “Alright , alright, here,” he sat down next to the youngling and spread the scroll open, then handed the pen over to the youngling, who grabbed the pen with her mouth and began to draw an elaborate art piece.
They drew out a story about them showing up at this strange place with humans and tall grass. Crickets and other strange creatures they have never seen before on the land of Paradise. Then they show Eve, and them next to her. The instructor stops their drawing for a moment, they lower their voice almost to a whisper, “did you… bond with this human?” The youngling was hesitant to answer, afraid of the possibility of punishment as they looked down calculating their response. “Please, tell me.” he set a paw on their head reassuringly. Reluctantly, they nodded their head, looking to him apologetically.
“...continue.”
Surprised at his response, they took a deep breath of relief and continued drawing the story; explaining the strange anomalies in their vision, the golden paths, the symbols above creatures' heads. They then try to draw down how they show up in seemingly a different time, which was quickly stopped by the instructor once more. His demeanor became concerned as he looked into their eyes, under his breath he uttered, “time travel… I should’ve known…”
Time travel? Time. Travel. Sounds bizarre. The youngling looked to the instructor confused about what time travel means. “Not only time travel, but you have another gift too. Such an unfortunate combination. I’m so sorry…” he got up and paced for a minute, he seemed worried. The youngling wiggled their ears wondering what was causing the instructor so much strife.
“I understand now. I understand why Cirrus never told anyone about your gifts. Your gifts… they’re forbidden. I don’t really know why, but… it’s not something ‘they’ want.”
The youngling sighed sadly upon hearing the news. “Despite your gifts, you also bonded with someone other than Olivia. But don’t fret, I won’t get between you and the girl, in fact I encourage you to get better at your gifts to use it to your advantage. Who knows, perhaps your duties won’t go unnoticed, even save her life someday. That’s the way of the Guardian, right?” The youngling smiled at the instructor, “Don’t worry, I’ll handle Master Theo and Olivia with the “devastating” news. In the meantime, I’ll have to change your lesson plan to a more… “individualized” one. Sound fair?” The youngling agreed, “Good.” He smiled.
The youngling appears in the tent, where Eve was a little older, around 9 years old or so. She was practicing by herself, doing tricks in rings high above. Excited that they finally got to Eve again, they bounced around in a circle and crickets happily at Eve. She turned her head towards the sound to see her dragon, squealing happily. She made her way down and ran over to them into a tearful embrace. “I can’t believe you actually showed up again,” she hugged the youngling a little tighter. “Promise you won’t disappear like that again? At least not until after the show tonight. I’m not allowed to perform yet, but you must watch!” the youngling agreed, puffing out their fur and feathers in happiness.
Eve and the youngling spent the entire day together, laughing and playing. People found it odd, however, that Eve was seemingly talking to nothing. Just another of her ‘imaginary friends’, her mother likes to say to them.
When the sun began to set, people started to arrive either on foot or with horse drawn carriages. Paying their measly dues and entering the tent. The youngling stood with Eve fascinated by the sheer amount of humans showing up for a show. “It’s magnificent, innit?” she smiled and sat next to the youngling. “It’s not much, but seeing people smile is all I ever want when I go up there. Better yet, I love seeing them smile after every show…” she watches people continue to file in, reaching her hand over to the youngling petting them. “I’m so glad you’re here,” she sighed contently as then there was a small jingle to signal the show about to start. She motioned the youngling to follow her into the tent, sitting down on a bench near the entrance. The dragon laid down on her lap, loafing like a cat would do and started watching the show with their human.
When everyone took a bow, roses were being thrown to the performers in the ring as they loudly cheered. The younglings ears perked forward, taking in the sights. Flowers being thrown at humans after doing an extravagant show like this? Fascinating.
“So, what did you think?” Eve looked to the dragon as they stretched. The youngling looked to Eve with a smile and puffed out in glee, “I’m so glad you liked it! Promise you’re going to see me when I finally get up there, yeah?” The youngling whistled and chirped in agreement, rustling their feathers on their wings as they follow Eve out of the tent. Eve saundered past her family's wagon to the long grass field, to the spot where they first met. “Hey, do you have a name?” the youngling looked to her, tilting their head. They sat down in front of Eve, offering their paw to her, as a custom they learned from their instructor. “You...don’t officially have one do you?” she held the paw in her hands, glasping them gently around it. “Well, I know we haven’t been around each other a lot. But it's’ as if I’ve known you my whole life… you’ve known me almost my entire life haven’t you?” The dragon nodded slowly looking at her, waiting patiently. “I mean… we just click together every time I see you. I look forward to seeing you every day… hold on a moment… I think I may have an idea.”
She smiles at her guardian, “How does Click sound?” [/i]
