I, eventually, got the girls off the train then walked through a part of the woods that smelled familiar. I walked with them several miles out, checking in on them to make sure they were both in eye sight.
"Are we going the right way still, papa?" Cynder asked, and I smirked as I looked back at her, "Are you going a different direction?"
"Town's not far, don't worry." I smiled and started looking around the trees, "I'm just finding something I left here once. Kind of like a time capsule." I looked back and saw Serina looking at me suspiciously, "Okay, it may not be exactly like that, but it'll really help us."
"It's a cash isn't it?" Cynder asked with a smile, "Serina thought that and you've thought it up for several minutes." Her tail started wagging, "We're gonna find one aren't we? What's in it?"
"No peaking in my head, kids." I said, looking back at them, "Let your old man have his surprises." Then I kept walking till I saw an old red barn. "Aha!" I ran over to it and started to walk around the sides.
"Oh, this is the marker!" Cynder said, "Come on!" She took Serina's hand and ran after me. The girls ran inside, but I walked around the sides still, trying to remember where I left it.
"Dad.. this is the way inside." Cynder called
"That's where anyone else would look." I said, and I stopped at a corner, then I looked in where they came. "You know there's bugs in there." I said, then started thinking about the spider monsters I use to see at drive in theaters.
And then Cynder ran out screaming. Panting, she looked at me, "You were just making up those things, weren't you?"
"Maybe." I said, "but there are some bugs in there. Now to show you what I hid here." I knelt down and started digging. When Serina finally got out of the barn, I pulled out a large duffle bag. Serina leaned over my shoulder and sniffed it. "Smells like earth, right?" Then I nudged her back with my shoulder. "Well you were the last one out. So your sister gets to open it."
"Yes, score!" Cynder cheered and grabbed it the bag. I let go and let her undid the zipper, "Oh my gosh!" She shook it a bit and bundles of money fell out of the bag, "Where did you get all this?"
I smiled as I looked at her, "Missy, I've done a lot of stuff in my time. I think I got this after selling a property deed to some locals."
"Well, what are we gonna do with all this?" Cynder asked
I got up on a leg and took out two bundles of bills, "We're gonna put the rest back, and use this for a good breakfast." Then I took the bag from her and zipped it up.
"So, those two bundles are just for food?" Cynder looked at the bundles I was putting in my pockets, "What do we do with the rest?"
"I dunno" I said and pushed the bag back in the hole, "Maybe we'll comeback for it later." Then I started burying it, "This is all we need."
"But we could have a home with all that though." Cynder said, tilting her head, "Why not do that?"
"It's complicated." I said, dodging the question, "For now, let's get some food." Then I stood up.
"But-"
"Who want's pancakes?" I said
It got Cynder's mind off of it; it helped that I was thinking about how great my wife's pancakes were. Though, Serina was just glaring though it all, first at the money, then at me when I dodged the subject. I tried to get my mind off of it, and just kept the hope of a great breakfast in my mind for Cynder's sake.
