For those that haven't figured it out yet, one of the primary purposes of the two human detectives is to be the exposition monkeys, of characters whose initial purpose is to be the clueless character others explain things to for the sake of the audience. As a result, you'll actually end up learning far more about the Underground from the humans, than from the characters themselves. Because those in the Underground already know all this information and would have no reason to tell each other about it. The downside is that there is a lot of character interaction with the Underground that won't be made very clear what's going on all the quickly. A good example of this is the Black. Because the detectives haven't learned of it yet, what the Black is hasn't been explained yet, only that the characters in the Underground are extremely concerned about it but are willing to kill over it. I also wanted to have the Underground feel very believable so I spent a lot of time developing at least some of the Underground members.
