Carmelita gets a shock.
While cartooning you occasionally find yourself asking questions no sane person would ask. In this case I needed to draw Carmelita looking surprised (for an upcoming project), and the level of surprise I initially drew for her… well it just wasn’t enough, so I mentally added someone sneaking up behind her and shouting ‘BOO!’. It still wasn’t right. So while pondering this I remembered an interview I read with Scott Adams in which he said and exaggeration wasn’t enough for comedy, you needed to push the situation into the Nth degree. So I found myself asking this question, ‘What would Carmelita’s expression of shock and surprise be if someone unexpectedly shoved a large potato up her bottom? At the risk of sounding egotistical I think I nailed the expression.
