Bedford was a brand established by British motor manufacturer Vauxhall in 1931 to distinguish its commercial vehicle operations. As Vauxhall was itself owned by General Motors at the time (and still was right up until 2017), the original Bedford was initially marketed under the name “Chevrolet Bedford” under the first name was dropped in 1931, and even after that Chevrolet car parts manufactured in Canada continued to play vital roles in the British-constructed vehicles. With initial manufacturing initially focused on lorries, Bedford soon expanded into making buses, vans, and vehicles for emergency services. The model pictured here is a Bedford J1 Ambulance, which served in Central Glamorgan in South Wales through the late 1950s and 1960s.
