I thought it would be fun to compile a list of characters who inspire me to write Faustus jokes every time I engage with them, and then I turned it into this thing!
Are you surprised by any of these? :o

I must admit I like the character Faustus. He's kind of the everyman's... Er, every Deer's Buck where not only does the action happen around him, but the often strange and funny things happen To Him. His adventures always give me cause to pause and think, and what makes the strip's humor so appealing is that there's always the Anthropomorphic Animal twist lurking someplace in the panels.
I can explain the Fritz!!
Fritz was really R. Crumb's sendup of a very specific type of man in the 60s; the pseudointellectual, woker-than-thou college student who actually harbored a lot of biases himself. Watching this archetype at play in Crumb's comics gives me a lot of inspiration for Faustus jokes~ he's not based on Fritz (I didn't discover Fritz until semi-recently), but Fritz has been a valuable resource in understanding the cultural context.

Oh man, "fascinating" is truly the only word I can use for Crumb. There's a lot going on there.
My inspiration from the Fritz comics is kind of muddy, since I only read them and watched the movie a few years ago-- so, a long time past the creation of my comic and characters-- but engaging with them really made something click in my mind, like "oh, that's what this archetype looked like in the 60s, that's the sort of mentality and context I should be looking at for Faustus".

I'd watched the Fritz movie maybe a decade ago(as well as 9 Lives of Fritz :\ ). The documentary I'd seen just a few years ago, but it really interested me in the original.
Now I have to jump all the way back to the beginning of Kicks/Awkward Paws and see the whole evolution of your work! Great!
