The never-ending battle of cyclicality, The Jaguar vs. The eagle.
In Aztec myth, these two beasts continuously battle for supremacy, with the Eagle always winning (as the Day always concurs the Night, and Night to Day, and so forth).
I took some artistic levity when painting this- for example, the Jaguar here is in Black, not Yellow. I did this for an artistic reason (trying to keep the balance of color in the image equal), and an atmospheric one (the Black jaguar in myth is supposed to represent a Jaguar after/during chaotic battle, where his skin is drenched with blood).
Also, the head-dress of the Eagle sports a more "pinkish" tone of feathers then red- mainly because the with the red feathers, one could misidentify him for a Rooster, not Eagle.
My Medicine Woman never got to see the original of this, as I had already returned to Toronto from my residence in Vancouver. She told me that it was better that way- she would have requested the image if she DID get to see it!
he original hangs in my Auntie's house- it was a Christmas present for her.
Recently I was at the Native Canadian Center's First Roundance in 30 Years. While selling my art, another vendor couple approached me. The man was silent but looking at this image (the prints) and his wife asked if I could explain the piece. Recounting the story to them, she turned to her husband and asked "Is that right?" and he nodded.
Turns out, he too is Nahual, and immediately recognized the concept- and was testing to see my accuracy in authenticity. After proving it was correct, he offered to trade goods for a print- I earned a pair of Turquoise Earnings, hung on Silver with 2 Swarovski crystals on each(Pink and Purple). They are in the shape of a bear.
It also turns out that he dances in the Aztec Dance group I have been dancing with as well- but he comes on Thursdays, and I come Sundays. I have to make it a point to come on at least on Thursday to hang with the weekday crowd. :)
