Nightlight is an overpowered unicorn — yet she has special needs. She has Unicorn Syndrome, a condition similar to Asperger’s Syndrome. Nightlight loves math and science, but she’s had a hard time understanding friendship.
Nightlight’s big brother is one of few who’ve known how to connect with her. White Night is truly Nightlight’s big brother and best friend. He is determined to help his sister learn the science of love and happiness.
Nightlight fears the thought of having a heart that can be broken. The thought of needing a friend is scary to her. She couldn’t quite put it into words — but her brother has helped her figure it out.
Moreover, as one with Unicorn Syndrome, Nightlight has had a much harder time learning social skills. And she’s had a much harder time appreciating such things.
In addition to bad social skills, Nightlight has had some serious anger problems. As an overpowered unicorn, her parents have been nearly helpless against her. They have not been able to take care of her by themselves.
White Night has put his heart into raising his sister. He is ten years older, and he’s been a bit like a guardian angel for Nightlight. Her big brother rivals her in power. She may have more raw power — but he has more control over his powers. When she gets out of control, he can contain the damage.
Nightlight can literally explode in anger. She may also cause an explosion when she gets terrified. Some of the strangest things can strike fear in her or cause her to have a meltdown. She’s afraid of the lights and sound of lightning and thunder. She’s afraid of large, noisy clouds and rooms full of flashing lights.
Nightlight can be a perfectionist about her writing and her studies. She loves to boast about her academic skills. She even shows some basic drawing skills. Conversely, she tends to leave her room in a mess. And she tends not to groom her hair and tail.
Nightlight can barely see without her glasses. Without her glasses, she may become terrified because she may feel lost.
Nightlight has often been a nightmare to raise. But somehow, she’s about to become her brother’s dream come true.
White Night has taught her that life is made for friendship. He has taught her that friendship is the meaning of life — starting with our love for our Creator. Over time, Nightlight has come to trust our Creator. And she has started to long for the knowledge that will let her find all the friends she needs.
As Nightlight learns how to connect with others, she learns that social skills are not nearly as natural as they’re cracked up to be. Social skills are a science, and everyone must study them as such.
White Night cares much more about practical knowledge than academics. He may not care about college — but he is highly versed in the art and science of building friendly relationships. Thanks to his charm and kindness, he has managed to befriend Princess Skysparkle — the main ruler of the Starpony Kingdom.
Skysparkle has practically adopted Nightlight and White Night as her own. They are truly her godchildren, for all practical purposes. She is training both of them to be rulers someday.
To gain this birthright, they must prove that they really are driven by friendship. Skysparkle is a mother who wants to be our best friend. She wants her godchildren to be great big brothers and sisters for their people.
As Nightlight longs to make friends, she finds herself limited only by her willingness to do the work. She finds that social skills are not really something people are born with in the first place. They are not learned in a vacuum — they are learned from interacting with other people.
With the right attitude, Unicorn Syndrome does not have to be the limiting factor. White Night was born with an exceptional amount of emotional intelligence — but Nightlight can build her own emotional intelligence with practice. Her talents in math, science, and art can be easily applied to the science and art of friendship.
With these advantages, Unicorn Syndrome doesn’t have to be a handicap. Instead — it can be a different vantage point for understanding the world of friendship.

Visual Description:
Nightlight is a lightish purplish pink unicorn with bright purplish pink hooves. She has darkish pinkish magenta hair with a dark stripe and a golden yellow stripe.
Nightlight's hair is straight, but it is fairly messy. It extends near the tops of her forelegs. She wears dark violet glasses with half-circle frames. She has darkish purplish violet eyes.
The mark on Nightlight's flank is the following:
A tall eight-point star that stands for the North Star; beside it are seven five-point stars that make the Big Dipper. The tall eight-point star is a bright reddish hot pink. The eight-point star is made of two perpendicular crosses -- a tall one and a square one. To the upper right half is a triangle of light golden yellow hearts. The seven stars of the Big Dipper are white.

This certainly adds depth to the Star Ponys universe. We get the introduction of Night Light's struggle in which she must learn how there is no science to social skills. This definitely makes for a great plot element for how, at least to my knowledge, such a concept for a character to work upon is seldom, if ever, done.
Sky Sparkle serves as the, if I guess right, the 'balance' of if you could merge Night Light and White Night together. White Night may have social skills but he may lack what Night Light can come to naturally through studies.
Great points on how different stimuli can put Night Light into very compromising positions. I wonder if some ponies would use such things against her? Perhaps White Night helps Night Light to find refuges from areas prone to being 'triggers' for her Unicorn Syndrome?
I can see almost an entire chapter / episode based on Night Light losing her glasses. The idea to be how different the world is to her with uncorrected vision while seeing who does what to either help, or hinder, her during a moment of panic.

Actually, I said that there is a science to social skills — though it is as much an art. There are basic principles about people that every diplomat has to know.
In any case, it looks as if the way my work approaches friendship is already fundamentally different than with MLP. FIM is about the magic of friendship. My work is about the art and science — and why friendship is life itself.
Nightlight’s struggles can be reminiscent of the kirins’ struggles in FIM. That moment where Twilight Sparkle burst into flame in “Feeling Pinkie Keen” is a recurring problem for Nightlight — not just a one-off gag. She might burst into flame, and/or she might explode. (By “explode”, I mean she releases a shockwave. She herself does not blow into pieces. I just want to be sure that is clear.)
I’m thinking that Nightlight is nearly blind without her glasses. She can see basic colors — but little else. She can learn sonar-like spells to help her navigate, but learning how to make pictures from such data takes a lot of practice.
People who think Nightlight has a vulnerable spot to take advantage of — that probably should be a recurring element, now that I think about it. Those who don’t know who she is are in for a big surprise if she blows up on them — or if her brother finds out. I can have Nightlight know what it’s like to be bullied — but without feeling physically helpless. Gaining control of her emotions is the big challenge.
Maybe White Night’s apprentice Starlyre helps her develop spells to help her feel safe from unwanted stimuli. White Night can execute advanced spells, but Starlyre is an expert on writing them. Starlyre is an earthbound pony, but he can understand how spells work — even if he can’t cast any on his own.
