"Well, it's good news," commented Stalleger.
Finally freed from the alcove, he had called at the Sneers' hotel room to convene of a new time for the signing.
Cyril told him about the fact he did manage to take the coin from the thief, and now had it.
"Do you want me to come and give it to you?"
"Actually, I'd prefer you to keep it for now. The thief must have realized his failure, and he'd probably think I have it, not you. So, until the police gets him or I have better security installed, it'd actually be safer in your hands than in mine."
"Are you sure?"
"I think so, at least."
"Well, all right, then," accepted Cyril, thinking such an act of good will would help with the contract.
A new meeting was then decided for the day after tomorrow.
Later this day, Cyril was examining the coin.
It was made of gold, and covered in sorts of glyphs, the main one looking like a bull's head.
A museum piece, but nothing special, that he never saw before since he never went in Stalleger's office.
So why was the aardvark sure he did see it before?
"Pop!" exclaimed Cedric who had still been on his computer. "Come see that! I've found tons of stuff on the coin!"
"Really, what?"
"Apparently, the coin is only a part of a set of six coins. According to a specialist, this set, the "Star Coins", is legendary. Not much is known exactly about them, but what is known is that the last time the full set was seen was in 1916, at Saint Petersburg, during a ball. After this, two coins only have been recovered. It was in 1946 by a French aristocrat. He eventually auctioned them to pay some debts. While one of them got bought by the Louvre museum, the other, this very coin, has been auctioned again and again, passing from one hand to another for years, each time more valuable. Look what mister Stalleger paid at the last auction."
Cyril whistled at the astonishing amount shown.
Then a grumble from their stomaches reminded them it was time to eat.
Thus, they went to the hotel's restaurant and ate a not too expensive but delicious dinner.
"Maybe that thief wants to take all the coins," suggested Cedric once they were back at their room. "Maybe he even has some of the missing ones!"
"Probable," admitted Cyril. "If one coin is worth that much, imagine how much the whole set must be worth!"
"Sounds like he wanna be very rich."
Then, the tiredness from the events of the day struck back and they crawled in their beds.
"Gaaah," muttered the older aardvark.
"Pop? Something's wrong?"
"I just can't shake the feeling that I already saw that coin somewhere..."
"Really? Where?"
"I'd like to remember... G'night, Cedric."
"G'night, Pop."
And on these words, the Sneers let slumber take them.
EVERGREEN FOREST, MANY YEARS AGO...
"All right, this is isolated enough, no one will spy on us. Listen closely, Radek, for I will now tell you about the Star Coins."
"The Star Coins? What's that?"
A little aardvark playing next to the famous pond of the forest heard these words.
Listening to his curiosity, the little aardvark slid in the bushes, towards the direction of the voice.
He saw two wolves, an adult and a child, and the adult was holding a coin in his hand.
"This is our legacy, Radek," said the adult. "I didn't tell you before because you were too young to understand how important this is. But now, you're old enough to understand the basics."
The boy preened happily at this fact.
"This one is the only one we have left. They were many before, but have been dispersed. We must recover them."
"Why?"
"Because their power must be protected."
"Power?"
"Yes, they are magic."
"Magic?! Whoa, like in the books! It's an adventure! Amazing!"
In his bushes, the little aardvark was thinking the same.
The adult wolf, him, chuckled.
"How it works?!"
"As the guardians of this power, we received, or will receive at your eighteenth birthday, a special blessing. This blessing interferes with the magic, doesn't allow us to use it. So..."
"You just said I don't have the blessing yet! I can use it!"
"Wrong, the power doesn't work on children either."
"But I wanna know! Tell me, dad, pleeeeaaaase!"
The adult eventually chuckled.
"All right, all right. After all, it can't hurt for you to already know that, far from it. First, the adult-"
"I got it, I got it."
"The adult needs to activate it. This can only be done at the sunrise, for he must bathe the coin in the first rays of the sun and say this incantation..."
OTTAWA, PRESENT...
Cyril woke up with a start. Even though his head was still swimming in shock and sleepiness, he knew with certainty that it wasn't a dream, but a memory.
That's where I saw it! One of its previous owners!
It was almost scary, how this long forgotten memory had returned with such clarity.
He reviewed it all. The dialogue, this story of magic...
The incantation.
He looked at the window. It was night still, but the skyline was beginning to glow.
Cyril hesitated. A part of him was scoffing that it was ridiculous, that magic didn't exist, that it was just a story the wolf said to entertain his kid.
Another part, the bad, selfish part he listened for the majority of his life, and that was still here even though it had considerably weakened, demanded he tried, tempted by that idea of power.
A third part wanted to try too, to make sure of it, just to satisfy his curiosity.
At two against one, the conclusion was obvious.
Softly to not wake up Cedric, his father got out of bed, lighted a cigar to fully wake himself up, opened the window, and got on the balcony.
The sun was starting to rise.
"Crown of fire, child of the cosmos, awake the hidden force!" said the aardvark, beginning the incantation.
He suddenly stopped, as he saw the coin glow.
Shocked by this apparent confirmation this magic power was real, he took a few seconds to recover.
"Power of infinity, ultimate strength," he uttered in a more hesitant tone.
The coin's glow intensified.
One third hesitant, two thirds expectant, Cyril brandished the coin high and completed the incantation.
"Might you are mine!"
The coin shined a blinding light.
And everything went dark.
