It was explained to me once that severe autism can be like being able to focus only on one sensory input at a time, e.g. sight or sound but not both simultaneously. Tommy in the eponymous rock opera by The Who was clearly modelled after this kind of experience, and supposedly he was inspired by someone they knew.
