I love the story of the Silent Service during World War II. The U.S. submarine fleet, which the Japanese hadn't touched thinking they weren't much better than coastal defense boasts, ended up putting close to 90 percent of their merchant marine to the bottom. Which for an island nation that basically wasn't able to replace losses due to battle it was crippling.
