This image of the city of Alicante was taken from the side of a mountain shows an uneven skyline of distant rocky mountains and unique concrete and tile buildings.
To the bottom right of the screen is a football pitch, a feature of cities all across Spain, and in the centre right you’ll see a round-shaped building, the city’s Plaza de Toros. In the centre left is an area of green which hosts an abandoned fortress, the Castell de Sant Ferran, built in 1813 and named after King Fernando VII, who became the King of Spain after the expulsion of Napoleon’s brother during the War of Independence. Alicante was one of the last cities to be occupied by nationalist forces at the end of the Spanish Civil War, and the castle was used as a concentration camp for republican prisoners of war throughout 1939. From what I can tell, the large building you see in the centre of the image is just an apartment building, and it reminds me of a similar building in the Welsh town of Cwmbran, called ‘The Tower’; a multi-storey complex that looks quite out of place compared to its surroundings.
It’s funny that despite the uniqueness of each city in every country, there are always aspects which we can associate to others around the world. I suppose it goes to show that no matter where we come from, we aren’t so different after all.
Hope you enjoy!

I just spent at least an hour getting lost in Alicante without leaving my desk. Images like this remind me of many pleasant youthful hours with my stack of National Geographic magazines. I could explore the world with those.
I also enjoyed the interesting history on the Castell de Sant Ferran, and especially your closing thoughts on how different places can have certain similarities. That delightful, colorful riot of close, odd-shaped little houses in the foreground strongly reminds me of the rural fishing villages where I live in Nova Scotia.

I'm delighted to hear that! I hope to help you to explore many more cities like that, in the future. ^__^
That's good to know! Having been to Vancouver and Ontario a few times, I've developed something of an interest to visit Canada's other provinces, with Nova Scotia being No(va) exception. :)

Nowhere do I notice that more than from the air. The possibility of seeing tens of thousands of people at a time, each with their own lives to lead, having good days and bad days, perhaps with some of them looking up at me.
Thank you for commenting! I'm glad I could share it with you. ^__^

Oh, the Costa del Sol is magnificent! Up until a couple of years ago, my father owned a time-share near Fuengirola, and we'd go there every year. Each time, I got to know the place a little better, and went on excursions to Seville, Granada, and Cordoba. It's a beautiful region all round, and Gibraltar adds that little piece of home away from home...Britain but with good weather and monkeys. :P
