Macros committing mass murder with no consequences are one of my pet peeves... I mean, thing about it. Humans have been blowing shit up for about 200 years.

Completely agreed.
The only time i could see a macro getting around in a city is if the city was if low-yield explosions weren't affecting a macro OR another macro was sent in to fight them (and they can sure as hell expect air support in that case). In the case of the first scenario, i could absolutely see humans trying to bait the macro away from more vital structures while preparations to bring more destructive weaponry online are completed (i.e. Railguns, thermobaric missiles, etc...)
TLDR; humanity fuck yeah but macros are cool too so let's all make our macro scenarios more realistic together? :)

Well the whole thing with the missiles is missing the point of the original trope.
Missiles didn't stop Godzilla from rampaging because he had nuclear breath or whatever. The one time a movie was made where missiles stopped Godzilla (the American movie) there was a ton of fan backlash because it was as if the monster was just an animal and not "a force of nature".
In Evangelion angels have an AT Field and this makes them immune to most weaponry, I already mentioned Godzilla, there's also the monsters in One Punch Man, and well I could go on... the point is that part of the trope is that the monster is immune to weapons because __PLOT__. And the only way to defeat them... depends on the genre.
As for those macros rampaging being lame... well, yeah, most are pretty lame. But, narratively, "we killed it with a missile" is also pretty lame, don't you think?
