Hangin' With Harley (Harley Quinn DC series)
We don't do streaming services. Or, mainly, those that require extra moola to actually watch something. I mean I get the independence from those 'power movers' like Disney and DC and whatever...but I never liked the concept of paying extra to get into a 'club' for shows hidden behind a paywall...
I kind of get the club thing....
Yeah...and Disney's more annoying with that Monsters Inc. and Kingdom Hearts series they have coming on their private little network...ugh. Come on! They're based on a movie you've watched on regular tv, and a game you've played on consoles! But, it's Disney, they want your money, or your soul after that, so it makes sense....
Ooooh...missing those...
I know, sucks.
BUT...every once and awhile...for some reason...a show from these private VoDs goes public, if only for a limited run. Comedy Central did it with the Bojack series...or...at least it's first two seasons...
They said it's still on there but it's not! Great show too!
I know, that's annoying. Anyway, on occasion, this sort of thing happens and we 'normals' get a peak at shows like this. One of them was a surprise that Syfy decided to show the first season of.
Harley Quinn.
Oooh, I remember her from Arkham...
Ditto. While I admit I'm not a DC fan, me and Rigel have played the Arkham series and have the base knowledge of the Batman universe. So, when this animated series promoed, I was actually pretty interested. The art style attracted me first, making me somehow think of Hazbin Hotel....
Really? The art? Thought it was cursing...
...ok, fine, it was the cursing heh heh. Yeah, honestly, THAT'S what caught my attention. Batman's got it's darkness, for sure, but I've never heard anyone in the franchise drop and F-bomb like Harley Quinn. So, was interested to check it out for it's limited run that just ended (though I think episodes pop up on occasion)....and so glad I did.
Heheh, it definetly had a HH vibe heh heh.
The show is HILARIOUS. It's got a fast pace to it, with bits of calm to get you caught up, so there's lots to take in. There's plenty of witty jokes and critical strikes of the swearing library, but it doesn't bog down the themes.
Harley's looking to break off from the Joker...a kind of reference to that uhh...Birds of Prey movie neither of us have seen.
After Suicide Squad....ehh. But, WITH that, the seemingly only good thing to come out of that movie was the 'new' Harley Quinn. An independent, striking off from the shadow of Joker. Which is just what this series starts out with. Harley struggles to break free from Joker's influence to make her own independent claim to villain-hood.
Of course there's that whole...'women v. men' issue that comes up which I still find weird with humans...
Yeah we kinda got it equal where we're from...actually...some...females scare me...
...right. Anyway, Harley's progression from sidekick-to-full-time-villainess is a joy to watch. Her struggle is joined by her best friend Poison Ivy, who actually shows quite a calmness to her that's apart from her other appearances. She's Harley's rock throughout her journey, and comes with her own baggage of trying to open up more fully, especially with an apparently ridiculously minor character from DC who gets his own spotlight in the series.
Add in a method-acting Clayface, a misogynistic Dr. Psycho, and George Costanza if he was cyborg (Sy Borgman), and members of the Legion of Doom....
I am SO a fan of Bane!
Me too....it's just...a happy, wild ride. Something that can definitely uplift your day for a half an hour. This new, raw, honest viewpoint of the DC universe is just so enjoyable for a time like this. Sure, DC alum will probably get a lot more out of it, at least those who don't faint into Superman's arms because of some foul language, but it's still someone everyone can find something to laugh at with.
And we all sure can use that!

That might have been the beginning of it...though seems it's influenced by a lot of things I guess, from how Suicide Squad gave Harley a new look and independence from the Joker...and how I think it's said that there's a comic nowadays where Harley and Ivy are "together".
Not that there's anything wrong with that heh.
Oh, of course not.
