Heartbroken, the loss in volume
Those that know me, know I am an avid reader, And a hard core bibliophile. Most of my books are reference/history books, books I classify as 'God Books', Books that are anal in info on the subject matter.
These four photos show roughly 3/4ths the books lost in the water damage I discovered Saturday. Theres over 20 FEET of books there. All reference books too.
The top left photo is all my seriously good references, Schiffer titles, all ruined, the bottom right photo shows just how bad some were found. The bottom left photo is all my Osprey books utterly ruined. The small stack on the bottom with the viewable covers are all ruined as the water wicked up to the bottom on the box those sat in, water soaking up 3-4 inches, the top , longer stack was the boxes closer to the source of the leak, utterly ruined.
The top right photo is literally one solid mass of Editorial cartoon books, all rare, all regional, many foreign books included. My signed Jeff MacNelly , personally signed to me with a doodle by the 3 time Pulitzer Prize winner....ruined. I can't even begin to figure out replacement.
But literally the books ruined tore me up. I'm an avid collector of editorial cartoon books, had numerous books from all views and opinions. They are literally a excellent view of history via cartoon. 35 years, literally HUNDREDS of Editorial cartoon books going back to the 1860s to present day. Including SIGNED books by artists long dead. Many are regional only, not found outside the city the artist worked in. Usually by the newpaper printer on limited numbers. Books by Thomas Nast, John 'Ding' Darling, Jeff MacNelly, Hershfeld, Colfield, Pierce...all signed...all destroyed utterly.
They are literally records of local life and history. If you can find any in your local used book store, I'd greatly be appreciated if you can grab me a book.
My Osprey books I used for reference for most of my military themed drawings, I had large numbers of medieval armies, armor, and units I used for references for the Red Shetland comics and art here. I literally lost ALL the 'Aircraft of the Aces' series from #1-95 and
Combat Aircraft 1-95 as well. Literally lost hundreds of them.
If you wish to help out, stumble across a copy of some of the books you see here and the previous posting, I'd appreciate it. Plus I scanned what hardbacks I could and placed them on my Amazon wishlist, seen here https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3RMF9KWY05L5S/ref=nav_wishlist_lists_2?_encoding=UTF8&type=wishlist
I'm happy with used copies too.

Osprey books are usually found used in the military sections of used book stores, the editorial cartoon books in the humor sections. Though you need to look for the editorial cartoon books by actually thumbing through the books themselves, providing you know what to look for.
Oh holy shit man that burns like no other! I recognize those books int he 4th picture as those are solid military history books! I would see those i my high school library in the early 2000s in baltimore. jeepers man i sorry you had this much lost to water damage. Is any of this insured or covered?
Don't toss them. I think you can stick them is a bunch of salt. Go to the Library and ask the older librarian what to do to recover them. Go to a bookstore and ask the old guy there how to recover what is inside. Certain art museums would also know how to recover these books. They do it all the time to recover books that are a few thousand years old. Don't give up, don't toss them just yet!
Honestly understand your loss. My dad had similar and now we have all the books individually in big ziplock bags yeh it took a bit more space but the damp and everything hasn't got them this time even tho it got everything else I put in there thinking it would be fine :( lot of my old leather and wood army equipment didn't like it either but some is recovered other turned to mish
