Well, when you think about it... in an anthro-populated world, even if you make them all relatively human-sized, you've still got such a wide variety of head shapes, sizes, and ear placements to deal with that an elastic head-strap or some kind of tie-string really is the only practical solution if you want to be able to mass-produce them economically. Otherwise, every species needs its own specific product line designed to fit them, and that would be an inventory-management headache of epic proportions.
