So, as I noted yesterday, this weekend is the weekend that would have been Fur-Eh if it weren't for the pandemic. The theme for Fur-Eh this year (and now next year) was 'Mardi Gras', which provided part of the inspiration for this story.
The other half ot the inspiration for this story was from the reactions I got for getting pictures of Mercedes done at https://www.furaffinity.net/view/35004704/ and https://www.furaffinity.net/view/35251624/, along with requests if there was a sequel to Mercedes: Meetings. The two ideas crashed into my head together as things sometimes do, and I started pondering the idea of tracking down a shapeshifter in the middle of a Mardi Gras parade, which sounded all sorts of fun and complicated.
Also, the bit about 'but it's Sunday' was because I looked up moon phases and discovered that, yes, there actually was a New Moon on the Sunday before Mardi Gras in 2020. So I just had to go with that.
Posting this in part because it ended up growing longer than would have fit in a conbook story, so if I want to submit something for the con when it re-opens, I'll have to write something else anyway. But it was too fun, and once i started getting to 'how would it make sense for this to end given the value systems of each of the characters', it would have required a fair bit of work to shorten it.
And yes, I did leave another deliberate hook for next time...

I actually looked up a schedule of events for Mardi Gras before starting on writing this, and found that yes, there are parades and events starting a good month ahead of the actual Mardi Gras. As mentioned in the story, there are just so many people trying to organize events that the people with less clout have to schedule way earlier because the good slots are already taken.
Another good story. I really like Mercedes, even though she uses Marie as a reluctant bait. The kitsune probably expected their prey to be relatively harmless.
Next time ... maybe we could get to know a little more about Marie. We have come to know Mercedes quite well, but all we know about Marie is that she is a young human woman who grew up in a small town.
Mercedes may have had a longer and more interesting life than Marie, but in the previous story they talked for several hours, so one would expect that more facts about Marie should have emerged. But perhaps you have intentionally omitted the details, so that the readers will be able to identify with Marie?

I have some ideas to possibly go with... true, Marie at this point is at least somewhat of an audience surrogate because she's the one who doesn't know much about the spirit world to start with. But she is already starting to grow out of that.
Definitely something to think on...
