It's always a hard time when a best friend or partner up and disappears on you for weeks at a time. Makes you worry and miss them. Hopefully they're okay.

It would be brutal, yes. But to just up and abandon them without even a word or having their input on it is incredibly selfish and I don't condone it. My image does not conform or support anything of yours, and quite frankly, being in this situation myself, your actions do offend me.
An example of a good reason would be like:
1. A health emergency. You're stuck in a hospital, or needing to care for someone else around the clock and can't get into contact with anyone, except emergency contacts;
2. Something has gone horribly wrong and you've lost everything. Home, belongings, etc.;
3. You need time away from all contact for a short period, but come back. Can be caused by a number of things;
4. You were drafted into the military or some other governmental reason;
5. Protective custody.
Those are the ones that come to my head as acceptable reasons to just up and disappear.
