I'm confused about something. Were some of their shiopmates on that ship when things went kablooey? Like the engineer otter? Or are the dead on that ship crew which these fellows had never met?

The crew aboard the Demeter have perished. The crew of our heroes here are from the Recovery. They are shaken and largely knocked about, but survived.
