As a kind of next step after my earlier fully-procedural landscape, now something different: a fully-procedural nebula generator (there also exists a commercial product like this but I managed to replicate the functionality using Blender's standard texture nodes). Largely inspired by
Foxwhee and his space landscapes . My setup so far does not allow for manual control of the outcomes so I can't make such neat geometrical forms as he does. But it should be doable at some point, using Blender's smoke simulator and its huge variety of force fields.

That's a good idea. Overall, I was so excited that I got this working (after 2 days of unsuccessful attempts) that I just posted first good-looking picture that was generated. There's a lot of room for improvement, maybe I need to play with replicating actual nebula pictures to figure it out better. And actually, a lot is directly controllable here, light and colors included, except the cloud shapes themselves. For that, I'll need to reach for more esoteric solutions.
This is basically just a volumetric shader for the nebula itself, particle system with light-emitting spheres for the foreground stars, and procedural texture for the faint background starfield. With some basic lamps to provide illumination. And the nebula reacts naturally to strong point lights so stars can be also placed manually, such as the one in the middle of the blob.

I remember watching some tutorial about it. I got so much to learn but no energy. By the time I get around to playing with Blender, I'm so tired from work and walking the dogs that I just put it off until the next day.
Still, doing short things like this is a good way to learn things. Sometimes, all I need is a little start and then I figure out the rest as I go. Sadly, it might not be the best method of doing things. I like to skip, a few chapters of a book, so to speak.
I'll give it a look. Message will follow.

Actually this was just a small side project, didn't advance much further than this. I had hoped to make some fly-through animations but unfortunately this doesn't work. It looks fine in single renders, but animations reveal moving banded patterns that ruin the whole effect. And it looks like a limitation of the engine, no amount of tinkering with options removed the problem.
