An Information Booth on Eastern Island, Spontoon Island Lagoon, during the 1936 Speed Week (24-31 August). This is a week of various racing events, including unlimited seaplane races. There are large audiences for the various events and appearances. Large numbers of visitors arrive, including international racing teams. This attracts upper income foreign visitors, and news agencies, which has a large economic impact on the small urban areas centered around the Spontoon Island Lagoon, especially the hospitality co-operatives, mechanical repair shops, and air & marine shipping. Lower income workers & visitors also arrive for the week, from the other close regional islands in the Spontoon Island Archipelago. Areas with displays and views of active racing areas can get very crowded, as can food and other service areas.
This information booth is not as busy as it might be. This may be for the time of day, or day of Speed Week, or perhaps its location away from the prime racing paths. The Speed Week Information Co-operative Committee staff are a combination of some volunteers & many paid staff, although a large part of the payments are in food and sleeping locations, and many social perks. The InfoCom staff can be recognized by the 'checky' patterns on hats & clothing. The black-&-white checks are for the information vendors, red-&-white for first aid (and other direct assistance), and green-&-white for racing control staff. Other checkered uniform colors exist. (Visitors are strongly discouraged from wearing large-check clothing items around the Speed Week. The wrong assumptions might be made.) Other workers (international & regional) may be hired and housed by the Spontoon Althing Committees & Co-ops during preparations. This includes maintenance & entertainment workers.
More information about Speed Week is on the Spontoon Island website: http://spontoon.rootoon.com/SPwRacCn.html

Only in carefully marked areas/roads/paths. 😉 Since it is difficult to talk racers into having mufflers on their motor vehicles, there is a lot of work for some of the priestesses to keep the sound limits down, too. If you see a hat placed brim-down on an altar or marked sacred area, please do not disturb the hat... or you will hear about it.
Holy Smoke! When I saw the thumbnail I thought someone had submitted one of my old line drawings. Well... Your works have had a lot of influence on my art through all these years. Did you ink this with a tech or dip pen? I really, really, Really like the expressions and poses of the figures.
Thank you! You should know that your line drawings were an encouragement that someone else was into these themes and group scenes, and that there were ways to try and do it right.
This was inked with a basic tech pen. I started out years ago doing inking with a crow-quill pen, and that might have influenced what I try and do with an ink line. I am discovering that I can do better inking when it is up about 130% or so from a print size. (Like using 11 x 14 inches to reduce to 8.5 by 11 inches.) This was more difficult to do with a good finish, as I was working on 8.5 by 11 scan.
Thank you for the appreciation. One thing I try to do (sometimes) is have someone (part of a group) reacting to events or people at a distance (by eye-look or body language).

I would be happy to see that happen. (Thank you for the preview!) However, this year, like the last 2 years, has been me giving very short notice reminders, if any reminder notice at all! As a result, I will likely be uploading art about Speed Week for the next 2 months, here on FA, and at the Spontoon Island website.
I'm also happy to see the Facebook notices of your model constructions.

Thank you. Selected props. And seeing old-timey Boy Sprouts making structures out of poles & ropes. And that is an actual Pacific Island building solution: bamboo poles and fiber ropes.
(For props: One artist did very good at deciding to show his various characters holding various sizes of aircraft propellers. That was very appropriate props for 1930s Spontoon Island.)
