Now that I have started drawing my characters' heads in a manner that doesn't MOCK THE ARTISTIC PROCESS, I have finally drawn a version of Nutmeg that I am happy with in terms of her overall form (head shape, ear size, body proportions, etc). I've mentioned in the past, however, that my ORIGINAL colouring didn't really make her POP as a character if you know what I mean. So here are some experiments:
1) This is the original version of Nutmeg as she has appeared in the past. There's nothing really WRONG here, but she's just a little plain.
2) I kept the original colouring but added a second shade to give a two-tone effect. Added a little bling in the ear and on the tail. Changed the eye colour just to test out a few shades.
3) Complete overhaul of the original colouring (That colour is called "Nutmeg", so don't say I don't think about these things). This version has two different coloured eyes, which is a real condition called "heterochromia", and put some markings on the ear and one leg. How does a tattoo on fur work? I dunno, I just work here.
4) I just went crazy with this one. That's definitely NOT going to be her Monday to Friday look, but I wanted to make something that looked a little science fiction-y, since that IS my ultimate endgame. Maybe she's going some weird kind of Super Saiyan here (very shyly). That one leg was intentionally left blank to add a bit of imbalance.
If any version, or ELEMENT of a version, stands out, feel free to let me know. Also feel free to let me know if I failed on all counts and should abandon my aspirations, pack a bag of essentials and live out the remainder of my days as a deranged woodsman in the forests surrounding the Northern Canadian city of Yellowknife only to be mistaken for bigfoot by the locals who then form a posse to capture me, tame me by rewarding good behaviour with Tim Horton's coffee, and take me on a world tour of museums charging $2 per head for a chance to look upon my majesty.

I'd say that the blue eyes are a good fit with the grayish fur as the fur looks ordinary but the eyes stand out.
The additional pattern on the second one does add more character but you also have to keep in mind that you will need to draw that pattern from all kinds of angles in the future so you ought to consider well how it should look like to make it easier on yourself.
Third one looks more lively, being in color instead of grey (and having a color that fits the name as you've said). Different colored eyes can be interesting but I feel like going for either brown or blue for both eyes helps the image of "a regular mouse" you've talked about before.
The fourth one is indeed a bit more than expected. :P I would say that it reminds me more of a fantasy elf. For science fiction perhaps a more angular pattern would work better? Or at least a few straight lines that connect with all the curved ones.
But of course don't feel limited by this, you should go with what you like the most. :)
One more thing about fur, it usually tends to be lighter color (in some cases white) on the bottom of a creature. The bottom side of the jaw, neck, chest, belly and so on, all connected together into one area. Perhaps give that a try and see if it pops better.
(google images "mouse standing up" and you can see it easily, as well as on other animals)
And no, you haven't failed, keep on doing what you do!

Awesome feedback, my friend. Thanks so much for taking the time!
I agree on all counts. I want to find a balance between interesting and ordinary. The whole point of this character is that she is unassuming and a "regular Joe", so I want an appearance to match that, while still being recognizable as a character. More difficult than expected, haha.
I see what you mean about the lighter fur under the jaw and such, and I still have the base drawing, so I can keep experimenting a bit.
I will probably end up taking elements from the first three and mixing them together a bit, stay tuned. Haha.
