It was so great to return to Olympus after so long! And it was a good place to start in the journey, with the whole 'hero recovering his power' thing that came up at the end of DDD.
It is kind of weird, though, that it took quite a few games before Olympus started taking cues from it's original work. Before then, it was actually some original stuff. Weird reversal there.
Oh that's right! The first game had the tournament, then the second had the underworld with Herc doubting himself...those were quite original weren't they?
Yeah, though they're missing two things that I'll bring up later, so stick to the new one for now.
Right! Boy was it a great first world! I mean...the devastation was upsetting, but it was visually cool. The world was so big too! The outlying areas of Thebes, the city itself, and the epic climb up Mt. Olympus! Not to mention facing all the Titans finally. Oooh! And it really was a good first world to start with as Sora was relearning things, just like us players were learning about the new stuff like Keyblade transformations!
Do admit, the scope of the first world really helped put things in perspective. They did do a great job with this initial world. It was big, full of life, big fights...and like said, it took some links from Hercules' story, but not as much as you think. Still, the journey in that world really was quite cool, from the city to the mountain, to even the realm of the Greek gods...kudos. And, as always, James 'Hades' Woods is entertaining.
Oooh, it was so cool to have a party of four too...but it gets better later!
Speaking of extras, NPCs. People made a complaint about that and...yeah I suppose I get it. While you do see some initially in the world, some may walk away disappointed....
Buuuut...! Even if you are, just be sure to return to the world AFTER the initial visit and you will be pleasantly surprised! A large portion of the world goes through a dramatic change in the recovery of Thebes.
Though Olympus' Realm is a bit lacking...
Oooh...well...guess the people up there are busy?
Pfft. But, overall, Olympus was a great world. With...a big exception...
Ooooh...right...yeah that...
With the main entries in Olympus, Hades always ropes in a Final Fantasy character he has to work with him. First there was Cloud, then Auron...it seemed like on track that he should have employed a third (Lighting?). BUT, early speculation lead to confirmation that Final Fantasy characters did not get as much treatment in this game as others. Weird, to be sure, but that kind of meant that there probably wasn't going to be one under Hades' dealings this time.
BUT, the main infraction of Olympus?....THERE'S NO COLISEUM!?
Heh...
Seriously! What were they thinking!? KH1 and KH2 BOTH had Olympus as the arena world! KH2 increased it a bit more worldly story-and-area-wise, but they both had tournaments you could fight in for experience and prizes, with an ultimate enemy at the end. I mean, Birth By Sleep had that mirage arena as a fill-in without Olympus, but honestly, the world had the classic claim.
Yeah...it was kind of the world's signature, was sad to see it wasn't there...
I know! And what's more, there's an OBVIOUS place for these fights to occur! Where the world's boss fight was!
Ironically, there was a battle portal at that exact place too...
Yeah! It was like a tease for freaking out loud! That's a round golden arena PERFECT for tournaments! It would have been SO annoying to have it as DLC, that would have been an insult, but not even Remind brought it. Nope, for some reason, they decided not to put it in, and that's a big disappointment.
Otherwise...?
Aside that GLARING ommition......Olympus was cool.
Heh...maybe next time?
Ugh...fighting against Leon, Yuffie, and Cloud in KH2 was so epic....sad to not see such epic fights in KH3....
