Well we sort of get a description of what he looks like in his projected form and get to meet his new team. And to his defense, it is very hard to look like a badass when you look like a fennec.
Edit- In retrospect, since the story never really explains it beyond it being a degenerative disease as it only affects Korin I want to quickly point something out between Projectors and Manifestors. Whether or not someone is able to Manifest or only Project is tied to their genetics. It is a plot point (mentioned in I think chapter 8, and comes up again later as well) that though there is a test to tell if someone can at least Project, there is no way to tell if someone is able to Manifest until they do so, which is why they are so scary, because they could be anyone. Well, anyone that can Project. But being able to Manifest is not an ability someone can acquire. Manifesting is a lot harder to do than Projecting so most Manifestors are able to Project for years before starting to figure out how to Manifest. So all Manifestors can Project. But 99% of all Projectors cannot Manifest to any degree. Their bodies simply cannot handle the process. There are environmental hazards (like a reaction to strong toxins, etc.) and genetic issues (where genetically they are able to trigger it, but their bodies reject the process) but typically Arilax Bane happens when someone that can't Manifest tries to force their bodies to do so anyway.
Once someone gets Arilax Bane they have it the rest of their life. Whenever they then try to gain access to their abilities, a tiny portion of their body would actually successfully change over (even if they're only trying to project). But their body doesn't recognize that it should be able to do this and so attacks these cells. This results in an incurable disease where each time they project, their body will eat itself alive just a tiny bit. Over time this results in the bones becoming more brittle, blood becoming anemic, muscles atrophying and eventually even organ failure and eventually death.

Fennecs! Second-cutest animal next to ringtails! (Red Pandas are third-cutest. )
The difference in power is not even close. Roughly speaking, in this universe, roughly 0.01% of the population are able to Project (not directly hereditary). This is effectively creating something like an Astral Projection of themselves, taking on a sort of Avatarial form that is specific to them. This projected form allows them to use paranormal/supernatural abilities (some could be considered akin to magic, others are more like superpowers). However, roughly 90-95% of their focus and energy is being spent maintaining the Projection.
Now roughly 1% of all Projectors are able to skip the need to Project. Instead, they are able to manifest their Avatarial form onto themselves, transforming at least part of their bodies to the other form while using their abilities. But they don't have to deal with maintaining an astral projection and just wanting to use the power will trigger the manifestation. How much of their total power is available depends on what percentage of their body they are able to Manifest. Most cannot manage more than a tiny amount. But this means that a Manifestor that is able to fully transform their body will be on the order of 10 to 20 times more powerful than they would as only a Projector.
So with that massive of a jump from Projector to Manifestor, it makes sense why some would be tempted to try and do something to get even a fraction of that increase.
