As a matter of fact, this is not an original character. This is a character that actually appeared in Dragon Quest Builders 2, although it's my interpretation of the character. It kind of warms my heart to see one of my favorite Dragon Quest Monsters as a friendly race of monsters. Along with the Bodkins, the fat rats have an alliance with the humans of Furrowfield. It makes me smile every time I see one of these chubby rodents just standing there and waiting to give me hints and directions instead of trying to fight me. In fact, you only fight two fat rats in the entire game, the blue ones anyway, and the second time you only Tire one out and he becomes your buddy sort of.
Late in the first chapter, you meet the fat rat Elder, who is the keeper of one of the flowers you need in order to grow the Deitree. There is no battle with him or test you need to solve. He happily hands over the flower seeds because he wishes to help you defeat the children of Hagron. I have beaten a good chunk of the game, and every once in a while, I find myself going back to the island of the fat rat Elder just because I want to visit him and because he is so big and Squishy that I just wish I could hug him.
I just light these creatures in general. They look like they just try to be menacing, but that just makes them unintentionally adorable. I like them for kind of the same reasons I like Raticate, and I can't help but wonder if gamefreak wasn't slightly inspired by the fat rats from Dragon Quest 2.
Fat rats belong to Square Enix.
