Journey's End (by Sashetha)
YCH from the talented
Sashetha! The piece below was another written by my good friend
Quilldragon, a companion piece to The Gem's Guardian.
The sand had burned beneath his feet.
Though scaled acclimated to the biome around him, Arix’s return journey had sapped him of most of his strength. More than once he felt the golden amber relic he carried pulse momentarily, soothing burned footpads or reinvigorating a tiring stride. The sword by which he’d claimed the artefact he carried hung sheathed at his side shifting with every step he took. With his right arm, Arix continued to heft and readjust the sizeable chain which proved to stubborn to remove. Only the lucky, rusted link had granted him victory in the unexpected fight for his prize. His other held the malformed shape of his shield, the crest slightly distorted by the damage.
He breathed a grateful sigh as the evening stars twinkled into view overhead. The sun had already gone down in the west, sapping the day’s oppressive heat. Just over the horizon, the out-of-sight sun continued to pinken the sky, fading to a darkening azure in the horizon. Now, instead of a searing discomfort, the sand had an almost cozy feeling to his feet as he tread.
The crimson sworddrake smiled at the sizeable village in the distance. Though it would be dark and chilly by the time he reached it, his destination seemed to beckon him back. Lighted window helping to point out what the fading light began to obscure. He felt another wave of amber pulse from the amulet as a shoulder of his began to ache from the weight of the oversized jewelry. Despite the rejuvenation, Arix set his shield and treasure down.
His eyes paused again as he took in his situation: another quest completed. The welcoming town up ahead shifted out of sight as he turned his eyes again toward the west. Looking back at where he came, Arix could still make out the tip of the pyramid at the same point where the sun had just sunk behind. Another challenge behind me, he thought contentedly.
He picked up his shield and prize and continued his trek toward his journey’s end… and much needed shield repair.
