American Mustelid Alpha - Episode 4, "Tooth And Nail" - Part 1
Ep 3, Part 2 || Archives || Ep 4, Part 2
It's Water Week! The top 10 are whisked away from Apopka for the first time in order to compete in several challenges at the local Olympic swimming facilities all the way in Tampa, Florida. The aftermath of last episode reaches its climax as tempers fly higher than ever before, resulting in another tense confrontation. Between the usual jockeying to win captainship rights and a few special guests aiding the group through a highly physical underwater Team Challenge, the intensity and ferocity of competition are bound to rise among the mustelids... until a horrific event shakes the whole game to its core.
We want to thank each and every reader for the amazing feedback and support you've given us this far! As usual, you can sound off in the comments and let us know what you think of the characters, the challenges as well as the story itself :)
Part 2 of "Tooth And Nail" will be out on Thursday, January 21th!
Warning: contains verbal violence and unsettling themes. Reader discretion is advised.

I find it a bit strange each day has wildly different temperatures. What is accounting for that?
Also, do either of you live in the Florida area to be confident in setting the scene in Central Florida vicinity, or what sort of research did you do to take on the task of writing a series such as this one?
I've never heard of the 'apnea challenge;' just of sleep apnea. When I looked it up, it is to test brain death; doesn't have anything to do with holding your breath. Unless I missed something?
I'm really not liking Eddie. He is turning into a deceitful little shit, so I am glad it didn't work out for him yet while doing it.
I never really liked the way swim caps look... I take it they were mandatory and they couldn't have declined them?
Ludwig must not be familiar with Tampa to refer to 'Southern Florida music.' Tampa is on the west coast and nowhere near the southern portion.
Overall, this segment was a good read though. Despite not liking the jailer, he wasn't as big of an asshole in this one as he normally is, although I didn't feel bad for him at all when he tried to complain about the mechanic.
I've never heard of 'underwater football' either. Had to look that one up too.
May I ask if the series is complete and you are just posting up the installments on a twice weekly basis or are you still writing fresh material towards the final chapter?

To depict the weather correctly, we simulated it through a website that records historic past temperatures at any location. For example, this is the weather in Tampa during the two days we "filmed" there.
I live in north-east Italy, while Harlow is a Venezuelan currently living in Miami, so we can say with a straight face we're not extremely familiar with the area. We put a ton of research to be accurate in the depiction of the places we used for this story, mostly using Google Maps and pretty much any piece of resource we could find on the internet. I personally chose Apopka as the main set for this story to avoid potential issues in using an existing RL military base (given that it's pretty much tough to find minutial information about such a place) and I thought it could make sense to stage the Burrow and the fictional dismissed Army base you saw in the selection process there.
Apnea literally means "holding breath". What we did there is a kind of static apnea, a discipline of freediving where you literally have to submerge your face under water and hold breath as long as you can.
Yep, the swim caps were mandatory to make it easier for the "viewer" (if this was a real TV show) to set apart the members of both team.
As for the "Southern Florida" reference, yeah this was a little gaffe on our behalf. But you do have a point - being from New Jersey, Ludwig is indeed not all that familiar with the area :)
The series is indeed complete, in that we've written most of the material already and we've settled on the result for months now. Right now we're just making small updates and revision as we go before posting each part, but the content is pretty much all set.

I ask because Florida weather depending on the season is not wildly erratic. Maybe during the winter months or odd autumn or early spring you would get it, but not say, during the summer months, where it is almost always sweltering.
How does your writing partner like Miami? I've never been down there before and just refer to it as "Little Cuba" or "Cuba II."
It is unfortunate but understandable about the mandatory cap thing.
You two did a good job for the research for the most part. It 'felt' like one of you had at least been to Florida. You named specific locations and the like. Just the geographical placement of some of them were off.
And I'm sure Crispin will be fine. At least, not dead. If he had died, the 'show' would have never been aired. Or had a disclaimer at the beginning, kind of like what you did here.
I am expecting him to either be just injured enough to be removed from the game itself or make a recovery. But death? No, that didn't happen and I'd be really surprised if it did without fair warning in advance from the 'company' itself. No reality t.v. show in their right mind would ever air a contestant dying. Not without approval for doing so first. Lawsuits would crush them otherwise.

It's been pretty erratic here by experience! 80F nights followed 51F nights, albeit the raining has taken a break meanwhile. And so far, Miami's been pretty swell for me, no big issues :)
Our gaffe since I never really seen Florida use "central" in their divisions before, mostly an even split north-south, but glad to know!

Easier said than done when you put together ten big, cocky mustelids and a quarter million on the line! The confine between being Alpha and downright condescending (or just a plain asshole) keeps getting treaded, and yeah, John has been a massive culprit this far. But there's a reason for everything...

I mean, I get his... 'plan', sometimes when he pokes at someone. But most of the time, he just does it to be a dick and ruffle someone's fur for the heck of it.
Like... the case with Chayne, Diego, and Duke. I don't want to shout racism and homophobia here, buuuuttt John kind of gives the vibe of 'that' kind of person.

Well? We can argue about his personality all the way to the last episode, but at the end of it, this is a competition of skill, determination, strength, and mind.
He might not win any personality awards, any time soon, and talks a pretty big game, but we can't deny that he does have the strength and skill to back it all up.
But for how long? I can't say. All I can say is that he's lucky that sabotage is a huge no-no in this show.
