Found this as part of a sketch page (more of a copy of the original) in a box of art thats escaped the burn pile.
My Muddflatt characters Hoss Williams and Fred Dangerbear. I had Fred with a 57 VW bug. Plus joked the car had a mind of its own and hunted down and ate older mid-70s Honda Civics (the type that looked like they had a scuba diver mask glass for a rear window.)
Artwork from the early 80s.

I had a number of type Ones over the years, one Beetle seemed to have a mind of its own. I could use it and it would run flawlessly for me, my spouse use it and it was a maybe. It always got her home but sometimes it wouldn't start for her or she would pull in a parking lot and just die. She would get mad at it and it would play dead... I went through that car a number of times and could find nothing wrong. She would get mad and stomp off in a huff, when she came back it would start right of and run like a champ. There were weeks when it would be fine then it would act up on her. Of course if I got in it wouldn't act up for her with me in the right hand seat.
When my middle brother worked at a VW shop back in the late 1970s, he built a '70 beetle for me out of the boneyard (parts of 2 or three cars). The gas tank kept getting water in it (condensation problems). The engine went after a few thousand miles, so I spent a small fortune to have it rebuilt by a 'reputable' local shop. 1,500 mile warranty on the rebuild. At 1,508 the engine blew; my brother rebuilt it that time. I sold it to our older brother and it was his problem after that. I'd never own another one.
