UPDATE 2/27/23: I've been thinking about this story a lot lately and wanted to return to it, and I made a few changes and additions. There's now an epilogue, and I changed pronouns in a few places. Additionally, I changed the line "There he was, looking like he always did" because I didn't like the implications of what that could mean. I hope you like this version of the story!
