Chapter 2: New School
“Here we are!” Hamato called out as he drove over to the huge building “Weston High” “I’ve heard this is one of the finest schools in the area.”
Max peered out through the window. Somehow, he felt a little intimidated by the size of the school. However, this would be his new school and where he could make new friends. That is, if he could make friends in the first place.
“Now, don’t you worry.” Hamato assured him, “this school is only a few yards away so you will be able to reach there in a few minutes.” “Besides,” he added, “I know you can make it out there and there are a lot of friends for you to make.”
“Yeah, sure Jii-chan..” Max replied. In truth, actually, he wasn’t sure he would fit in. He could handle the Congo jungle, the Arctic tundra even the dry Sahara Desert. But, in a high school, he felt out of his depth.
“Now, be sure you be polite to your teachers and classmates.” Hamato said. “Eat well and listen to the teacher”, “Above all, try your best not to go wild during class or recess.” Max chuckled at that statement. “Sure thing, Jii-chan but I doubt I can try.”
Hamato chuckled as well. “Well, one can hope.”. Hamato drove his car near the school gate. “Head over to the principal’s office first. She’ll bring you to your class.”
“Sure thing, Jii-chan.” Max said. “I’ll get out from here.” “Ok, and good luck out there!” Hamato said. “Thanks again, Jii-chan and see ya!” Max called out as he got out of the car and closed the door.
Once out, Max watched his grandpa’s car drove out of sight and turned to look at the large building. He did not know what challenges awaited him in there, but he felt confident that he could make it.
“Well, better hurry if I don’t want to be late.” Max thought to himself before he hurried off to the principal’s office.
(10 minutes later….)
“Class, we have a new student today.” Explained Mrs Hoffman “This is Max Yamato, a half Japanese who was raised in Africa” she added as Max stepped forward to his class.
“Hello, everyone, I am pleased to be joining you” Max said politely while bowing Japanese style, as that was what Hamato taught him. He heard many of the students snickering softly thanks to his sharp hearing, causing him to turn red in embarrassment.
“Now, children, I want you to help Mr Yamato feel welcome here in our school and help him if he has any problem” added Mr Joseph, the principal of Weston Junior High “Well, Mrs Hoffmann, I’ll let you handle things from here and good luck to you Mr Yamato”
“Of course, Mr Joseph” said Mrs Hoffman, shaking Joseph’s hand before watching him leave. “Mr Yamato, your seat is over there” pointing over to one of the desks near the window.
“Thank you, Mrs Hoffman” said Max and walked over to his desk. As he did, he heard some of the students whispering about him.
“A Japanese boy raised in the jungle, that’s unheard off”
“Why would our class take in a jungle boy?”
“Yeah, what would the other classes think?”
“I don’t know, he looks harmless though”
“Don’t be fooled, he could be trouble.”
“Oh no, I was afraid of this” thought Max as he sat down on his seat. “How will I be able to fit in?” he wondered.
“So, you’re the new kid.” Said a voice. Max turned to see a boy about his age, sitting right next to him. He had blonde hair and wore a red vest and white shorts.
“Yes, I am” explained Max. “I’m Mike, but my friends call me Mikey. Nice to meet you” introduced the said boy with a smile while shaking his hand “I never meet a jungle boy before”
“Oh” said Max, embarrassingly. “Don’t worry, it’s alright” assured Mikey, causing Max to look up in surprise. “It must have been amazing, living in Africa” joked Mikey with a smile.
“Gee thanks” Max smiled back. “Don’t worry about what the others will say, I’m sure you’re going to fit in great.”
“I hope so too” thought Max.
