Chapter 3: New Friends, New Rivals
After introductions were settled, class was now in session. Max was busy taking down notes from Mrs Hoffmann and whenever he felt stumped, Mikey was there to help him.
“I never had real lessons before, apart from my home school lessons and the lessons I learnt from the jungle” thought Max. “Is this what it’s like as a normal student?”
“RRRRRIIIIIINNNNNNGGGGG!!!!!!!” “Aaaaaarrrrrrrggggggghhhhhh!!!!” screamed Max, startling the other students. Max, scared by the strange loud noise, jumped as high as he could and hung from one of the lights in the ceiling, shocking Mikey and the other students.
“My word!” exclaimed Mrs Hoffmann “Max, are you alright?” “What on earth are you doing up there?” she added in surprise.
“Sorry, Mrs Hoffmann, I just got startled there.” apologized Max “I’m not used to such loud noises.”
“It’s only the bell, signaling the end of English class” explained Mrs Hoffmann “There’s nothing to worry about” she assured “Now, please get down before you hurt yourself.”
“Ok, sorry about that” To the teacher and the other students’ surprise, Max jumped down from the ceiling and landed safely on his feet. “Anyway, class dismissed, please procced to the next class”
All of the other students packed and started to leave. As Max picked up his bag, he heard the students whispering about him.
“What the heck, that gave me a fright”
“Yeah, what kind of student is afraid of a school bell”
“I told you he will be trouble for us”
Max sadly bent down his head. His first impression only made look more like an outcast now. However, at that moment, Mikey immediately went to his side. “That was incredible!” he exclaimed “I didn’t know you can jump so high!”
Surprised, Max explained “You’re not afraid of me?” “Afraid?” asked Mikey “Why would I be afraid?” “You just jumped up and almost touched the ceiling! No student can do that!” Max blushed in embarrassment, at least he made one friend.
“Come on, we don’t want to be late for Mathematics” Max nodded, flinging his bag over his shoulder and followed Mikey out of the class.
(5 minutes later….)
Max and Mikey arrived at Mathematics class to see that it was very crowded. The teacher hadn’t arrived yet so many students were chatting away. “I always look forward to Math class,” explained Mikey. “It’s one of my favourite subjects in school.”
“Well, I’m happy for you.” said Max. “Hey, Mikey!” said a friendly voice. Max and Mikey turned to see a girl coming towards them. She was wearing a red and yellow singlet and blue jeans, with her blue hair tied to a ponytail.
“Jenny, good to see you!” Max replied happily, giving her a hi-five. “I’m glad to see you too!” exclaimed Jenny, happily before turning to Max. “So, you’re the famous jungle boy?” Max nodded with embarrassment
“Hey, it’s okay” she assured, causing Max to look up in surprise at her. “It must be exciting for you, living in the jungle.” assured Jenny with a smile. "Besides, I never met a jungle boy before, such a strong looking boy such as yourself.” “Gee, thanks” Max smiled with happiness and relief, knowing not all the kids were suspicious of him.
“Max, this is Jenny, one of my best friends. She is also a great student in karate and Chinese martial arts” introduced Mikey. “It’s nice to meet you, Jenny” greeted Max, shaking her hand. “It’s nice to meet you too, Max.” replied Jenny.
Another voice spoke “You’re only wasting your time with him, Jenny.” The three friends turned to see a burly teenaged man, wearing a black hoodie with a large blonde streak in his brown hair.
“Oh, leave us alone Bruce.” said Jenny, crossly. Bruce humphed, “How can you stick up for this savage?” Max frowned at that name. “Hey, come on Bruce, Max is a nice guy, can’t you be a little nicer?” added Mikey, who was also upset.
“Nice?” asked Bruce. “To a wild jungle boy?” He turned to Max “If you’re going to cause trouble for us, brat, you might as well leave this class.” “Bruce!” protested both Jenny and Mikey while Max was quite shocked. “No offence, kid, but I don’t see why you belong in this class.” He added before turning and walked back to his sear.
“Dude, not cool man.” muttered Mikey. “Oooohhh!!! That Bruce makes me so mad sometimes!!” hissed Jenny. Mikey placed an arm around Max’s shoulders, who looked dispondent. “Hey, it’s alright, man. Don’t listen to what that jerk says.” Max smiled sadly, but he still didn’t felt assured.
At that moment, the door flung open and the teacher arrived in class. He was a stern looking man wearing a black jacket and grey jeans. He had messy black hair and dull grey eyes. “Everyone, return to your seats, class is now in session.” All the students compiled and the noise quietened down.
“Welcome to Math class, students. I’m Mr Lockwood, your Math teacher.” Said the teacher, eying at his students like a hawk. “And for all of your sakes, pray that you do well in my class if you wish to graduate.”
At the tone of his voice and from his scent, Max immediately knew that this was one teacher who shouldn’t be messed with. “Anyway, I will not tolerate any slackers in my class. However, there is at least one of you who has potential” added Mr Lockwood, eying at Mikey, who bowed in embarrassment.
“Michael, here, is one of the best students in my class” explained Mr Lockwood. “Remember, class, good students must be passionate in their studies and show confidence when answering questions to their teachers.”
“Now, let’s begin introductions by taking attendance.” Said Mr Lockwood, taking out a clipboard and pulling out a pen in his pocket.
After all the students were accounted for, Mr Lockwood gave more lectures about class requirements. He was especially clear of the consequences of being late, forgetting homework and slacking in studies.
Max was a little intimidated by Mr Lockwood’s requirements but he knew he had to learn to adapt and follow his instructions as he didn’t want to know of his punishments for failures in Math.
