Chapter 6: Music and Dance
Max and the students was now in their last class of the day, music.
“Yesss!” Mikey cheered with delight. “Music! This is my all-time favourite class!” “Calm down, Mikey” Jenny said, but with a smile “Class hasn’t even started yet.”
“Sorry about that,” Mikey said sheepishly. “I just can’t wait to show my stuff. Max wasn’t so sure, he never sang or danced before.
“Hey, what’s up, cats?” said a voice. The three friends turned to see an African-American boy walking towards them. He wore a red and black sweater with a hoodie and a picture of Rock and Roll on its back. He wore black jeans and a Kiss cap on his head.
“Yo, Dennis, my man!” Mikey cried out happily, giving Dennis a bro-fist. “What’s up?” “Oh, nothing but the ceiling, dude” joked Dennis, causing the two boys to laugh.
Watching nearby, Max pointed out “Wow, Mikey seems to have a lot of friends.” Jenny smiled. “Yeah, but Dennis is his closest friend of them all. They’re next door neighbours.” She added “Dennis is the best breakdancer and rapper in the entire school. He is also likes to crack jokes.”
Max was amazed, “He’s a dancer?” he asked. Jenny smiled “Wait till you see him on the stage.” Mikey and Dennis walked over to them. “Max, this is Dennis, my best friend in the whole world.” “Yo, jungle man!” Dennis said happily, shaking Max’s hand. “I saw your moves back at gym. You were amazing, man!” Max blushed in embarrassment.
At that moment, a girl walked into the room. She had long, blond hair with a streak of pink tied to a ponytail. Her outfit was a light pink blouse with white polka-dots and a pink skirt. She wore ear-rings of small pink gems and her shoes were a Skechers twinkle toes.
All the boys were captivated by her appearance. Max heard them say.
“Oh man, it’s Sophie!”
“She’s such an angel!”
“Check out that figure”
“Holy mama, I give her 80”
“Who’s that?” asked Max. Jenny’s eyes narrowed “It’s Sophie, she’s the head cheerleader and gymnast in all of Weston High.” She added “She is one of the most popular girls in school, second only to Rena.”
“Well, thank you for the compliment, Jenny Wenny” The three friends turned to see Sophie walking over to them. “It’s been a long time, hasn’t it?” Jenny gritted her teeth, Max was surprised, did Jenny and Sophie know each other?
Sophie turned to Max. “So,” she began, looking at Max all over “you are the great jungle boy.” “Uh, yes” Max said. Sophie looked at him and saw his bright blue eyes. “Hmmm… not bad” she said, surprising the three friends. “For a jungle man, you look rather refined.”
Max was stunned by her words. “With just a quick makeover, he could look better than some wild man.” She turned to walk away. “Anyway,” she added “just be sure to choose your friends carefully, just like a certain tomboy I know”
With that, she walked away.
Jenny was beside herself with rage at this. “You want to know what this tomboy can do?!” she exclaimed, angrily walking forward. “Woah, Jen!” Dennis managed to hold her back. “Chill, girl! Let’s not get worked up now!”
“Oh boy..” Mikey muttered. Max looked at him, uncertain. “Jenny and Sophie seem to know each other.” “Yep.” Mikey groaned. “Sophie and Jenny have been fierce rivals ever since 1st grade. It seems that hasn’t let up.” Max nodded in understanding.
At that moment, the door flung open and a woman dressed in a purple dress with music notes all over singing “Good morning, class!”
“OMG! That’s Susan Sapphire, the queen of music!” one of the girls squealed.
This caused some cheers among the students and some of the girls, Sophie included fangirl screaming.
“Thank you! You’re a wonderful class!” Susan Sapphire announced “Please take your seats now.” All of the students complied. “Starting today,” she introduced “you can address me as Mrs Sapphire and I’ll be sure that I’ll teach you all to be great thespians so that one day, all of you will have a chance to be stars for this year’s school shows!”
All the students applauded loudly, until Mrs Sapphire raised her hands for silence. She said “Now then, let’s start with introductions, shall we?”
(10 mins later…)
After introductions, Mrs Sapphire spoke out “All of you may not know it but everyone of us has talents but it takes time to find a special talent. We just to find it.”
She pointed out, “For instance, we have two special stars among us, Mr Dennis and Miss Sophie.” The students clapped as Dennis and Sophie rose up and made their way to the stage.
Mrs Sapphire said, “These two highly talented children are the best in my class.” She gestured to Dennis “This wonderful gentleman, Dennis here is a great rapper, beatboxer and breakdancer.” Dennis blushed in embarrassment.
Turning to Sophie, she continued “And this lovely lady, is one of the best dancers and has the loveliest voice when singing.” Sophie smiled widely and blew kisses to the crowd, much to the boys’ delight and Jenny’s disgust.
Mrs Sapphire called out. “Now, we shall have this talented pupils pull a performance for us.” She turned to Sophie. “Ladies first.” Sophie smiled, then walked forward. “Prepare to get blown away boys.” She said, in a flirtly tone and started her musical number, as upbeat music began to play.

Everyone grooved to the beat and tapped their toes to the rhythm. Max never heard such good music before, so he clapped his hands along with Mikey. Jenny, on the other hand, just sat cross-armed, with a grumpy look on her face.
When Sophie finished, all the students clapped and cheered, with some of the boys blowing whistles at her. Sophie smiled and bowed. “Well, lets’ give a hand to our lovely Sophie!” Mrs Sapphire exclaimed. Sophie blew more kisses to the crowd before making her way down the stage.
“Next up, Dennis, show us a few of your moves.” Dennis smiled widely. “Sure thing, Mrs.S” Dennis stepped forward. “Let’s get smoking!!” he cried out before music played and he started dancing.

Dennis pulled out a wide range of exceptional dance moves and skills. Everyone stared in amazement and tapped their toes to the beat. Max, in particular was astounded by Dennis’s dance moves.
Mikey and Jenny noticed his expression and smiled. “That guy can dance, can’t he?” asked Mikey. Max just nodded dumbly.
After Dennis’s performance, all the students applauded again. “Let’s give it up for Mr Smoove Move, Dennis!” Mrs Sapphire exclaimed. Dennis bowed and made his way down the stage.
“These two are the masters of the theatre.” Explained Mrs Sapphire. “You can all learn something from them.” Dennis and Sophie beamed with pride as the other students clapped.
“Now, let’s see all of your special talents” Mrs Sapphire told the class. “Each one of you will show us what you are good at.”
(Many students later..)
“Last but certainly not the least, our prince of the jungle, Max Yamato!” called Mrs Sapphire. All of the students turned to Max, who, despite being a little scared, made his way up the stage.
“Hello everyone, I’m Max Yamato.” He introduced. He could hear some of the students snickering under their breath, due to his sharp ears.
“Now, now students,” Mrs Sapphire “Let’s be quiet and see what our wild man can do.” Max complied and soon, he remembered one of his favourite songs as a boy. Music started to play and surprisingly began to sing and dance fluently to the beat.

Everyone stared at Max in amazement, Mikey, Dennis, Jenny and Bean were grooving to the beat.
This went on until the music stopped. Max was caught unaware by it and lost his balance, falling of the stage. Thankfully, Max saved himself by landing on one of his hands, launching himself of the ground before doing a flip and landing on his feet.
Everyone, even Max’s friends gaped at his last performance. Mrs Sapphire asked in surprise “Max, how did you do that?”
“Oh, it’s something I learnt in the jungle” explained Max sheepishly. “It’s nothing much.”
“Nothing much?!” exclaimed Mrs Sapphire. “That last performance was amazing and I never heard or seen you sing or dance so well before!”
“Thanks, Mrs Sapphire.” Max explained. Mrs Sapphire smiled. “You have quite the talent, Max. I’ll say that you’re more of a dancer than you think.”
Max blushed and made his way down, where he was surrounded by his friends. “That was incredible, Max!” Mikey said. “Yeah,” Dennis added, “you’re the man!”
“Gee, thanks guys.” Max said. Jenny smiled brightly at him “Atheltic, kind and good on stage.” She said “You surprise us more by the minute.”
Max smiled. This first day in high school turned out great. However, unknown to him, Sophie was staring at him, with a sly smile on her face and a strong feeling of want in her eyes.
