Chapter 8: Trouble with Peers
Today was the day for the field trip, everyone in Weston High was talking about it, especially in Max’s class. Max, on the other hand, was deep in thought.
He was still thinking about that strange dream he had the night before, the jungle, all the creatures and the beautiful Mother Nature. Her words echoed in his mind. “What did she mean by calling me, Wild Champion?” he thought.
“Hey, Max!” said a voice. Max turned to see Jenny smiling at him. “Are you ready for the field trip?” she asked. “Oh, yeah, I’m ready.” He said. “You okay?” Jenny asked “You seem to be daydreaming about something.” “Oh, it’s nothing.” Max assured. “You know, I never been to an industry much, too much smog and smoke.”
Jenny nodded her head in understanding. “Yeah, it’s natural. Besides, I would feel nervous, visiting the largest company in all of America.” Mikey arrived a few minutes later. “Well, in my opinion, I don’t see why we should waste out time going to that jerk’s company.”
“Hey, Mikey, you don’t have to say that.” Jenny scolded. “Why not?” asked Mikey. “I don’t see why we should visit that a**hole.” Max frowned in confusion. “You seem to dislike him very much.” He said.
“Oh, hey Max” Mikey smiled slightly. “However, dislike is such a poor word to use.” He added, while frowning again. At that moment, the class door slid open and to everyone’s surprise, Rena entered the class.
“Oh man, it’s Rena!” one of the students exclaimed.
All at once, all the students crowded around her excitedly, much to her embarrassment, asking her questions
“What brings you to our class?”
“Did you need to borrow notes, or something? If so, you can use mine.”
“Hey, let me your assistant for the field trip!”
“No, I want to be her assistant!”
Rena just giggled at their reactions, then noticed Max and smiled before making her way toward him, much to their surprise.
Max, Jenny and Mikey were surprised to see Rena coming towards them again. “Hi there.” She said smiling “It’s good to see you again, Max.” Max smiled back and answered “Thanks, you too.”
Rena turned to Jenny and Mikey. “It’s very nice to meet the both of you as well.” Jenny looked as if she would burst with excitement, much to Rena’s confusion. “Um, are you alright?” she asked.
Mikey stepped forwards and smiled “Sorry about that,” he explained “Jenny is a big fan of you.” Rena smiled and blushed in embarrassment. “I can I see that.” Jenny snapped out of her stupor and said “Oh, I’m sorry about that, Rena. I’m honored to meet you” while shaking her hand.
Rena returned the gesture, “I’m glad to hear that, Jenny.” She turned to Max, “Well, Max, you’re were amazing yesterday at gym.” Max was surprised, “You know about yesterday?” Rena smiled, “I saw everything,” she explained “That strange move you made, it’s nothing like I’ve ever seen.”
Max blushed in embarrassment. “Rena, what are you doing?” a voice called out. The friends turned to see a dark green haired girl, just about Rena’s age, wearing a white shirt and green skirt. “Oh, Jade, I’m just saying hello to them.” Rena explained.
Jade sighed, “Well, you should have told me first.” She turned to look at the others, and noticed Max. She frowned, “I know you, you’re the jungle boy from Africa.” “Yes, I am.” Max confirmed. Jade simply stared at him for a while, still frowning. “I don’t see why you should be here, though. You’re just a bad influence.”
“Jade, be nice!” Rena scolded. Jade turned to her. “I’m just stating the truth, Rena. He’s nothing but a savage.” She stated. “Hey, lady!” Jenny exclaimed, upset by her words “How can say something like that?!” “What’s wrong?” Jade asked. “He doesn’t know anything or even understand the ways of civilization.” She explained. “Besides, he might pick up germs or viruses in Africa.”
Max frowned, he was a little hurt by Jade’s words. “Jade, stop. Don’t say anymore.” Rena said. Jade turned to Rena. “Come on, Rena” she said, taking her by the hand. “It’s best you should stop talking to him.” With that, the two girls walked away to join another group of students outside. “Man, that lady’s harsh” commented Mikey, before turning to Max. “Hey, buddy, it’s alright. There’s nothing wrong with you.” He assured, smiling while placing a hand on his shoulder.
“Thanks, Mikey.” Max said. “Still, I wish others won’t treat me so bad.” Jenny smiled and placed her hand on Max’s other shoulder. “Hey, it’s okay, Max. Nobody’s perfect.” She assured. “Yeah,” agreed Mikey. “Besides, what’s the worst that could happen?” he asked.
“WHERE IS HE?!” a voice screamed out, scaring everyone. The door flung open, and an angry Louis stomped into the classroom, followed by a grumpy Shun. “You just had to say that, didn’t you, Mikey?” asked Jenny, sarcastically. Mikey blushed in embarrassment.
“There you are!” Louis growled, walking over to Max’s desk. Jenny and Mikey were surprised and a little worried for Max’s safety. Shun stepped forward angrily and said, “I’ve got a bone to pick with you, savage.” Max was confused “What do you mean?” he asked, “What have I done wrong?”
“Don’t play dumb, punk.” Snarled Louis. “We’re pissed off at what you did to Shun at gym, yesterday!” Max’s eyes widened in surprise, he didn’t know that his dodgeball would upset Shun so badly. “Hey, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you.” “Really?!” Shun exclaimed, “Thanks to your stunt, you made a fool out of me in front of my entire class!”
“I’m sorry, Shun. I didn’t know what came over me.” Max tried to explain but Louis wouldn’t hear any of it. “Why don’t you keep quiet if you’ll know what’s good for you?!” he shouted, grabbing him by the collar. “Gah!” Max cried out as he was roughly lifted up. “Max!” Jenny cried in worry “Louis, put him down!” Mikey exclaimed, not wanting his friend to get beat up.
“There’s no point in talking Shun out of this.” said a voice, Jenny and Mikey turned to see it was Harold. “It’s best you guys stay out of this.” he added. “Stay out of this?!” exclaimed Mikey in shock. “Mikey’s right, Harold, we have to do something!” added Jenny. “Why should we?” Harold asked, much to Mikey and Jenny’s shock. “The idiot should have seen it coming.”
“That’s right” Shun agreed. “It’s time that savage learnt his place in this school.” Louis smirked, “I’m going to enjoy this” he said with a wild grin before raising his fist at Max. Anyone could have been afraid but Max just simply took a deep breath and said, “If hitting me will satisfy you, you may do whatever you want with me, but it will soon come back to haunt you.”
Louis lost his temper. “YOU JUST MADE A DEATH WISH, PUNK!!” he screamed before sending his fist at him. “MAX!!!” screamed Mikey and Jenny. Max just closed his eyes and waited for the hit.
It never came.
A voice spoke up, “I believe that you’ve said quite enough.” Max opened his eyes and saw David in front of him, holding tightly on Louis’s wrist. “Hey! What do you think you’re doing you, asshole!” Shun exclaimed. “Yeah!” Louis added “That punk needs to be taught a lesson.”
“Yeah,” explained David, frowning and narrowing his eyes. “Why don’t you tell that to them?” Shun and Louis looked to see the rest of the students staring at them in fear and slight disgust. Shun growled, “Come on, Louis. Let’s go.” Louis was upset but released Max and walked away. Before leaving, Shun glared at Max and warned. “I’m letting you off, jungle brat, but if you make a fool out of me, you’ll regret it. And stay away from Rena, too!”
With that, Shun and Louis walked out of the classroom. David walked over to Max and helped him up. “Hey, man, are you okay?” he asked. Max rubbed his neck and smiled. “Yeah, I’m alright.” He assured “Thanks, David.” David smiled back. “No problem, buddy.”
Jenny and Mikey went to Max’s side. “Max!” Jenny cried in relief “I’m glad you’re alright!” “Yeah, dude.” Mikey added. “No one has ever tried to talk back to Louis.”
Max smiled at his friends. “It’s alright, guys” he assured them. “Well, don’t scare me like that ever again.” Jenny said, playfully punching his arm.
Max chuckled to himself. However, he was worried. The way Shun acted towards him for what happened during dodgeball practice must be somehow connected to the strange dream he had. What could it all mean?
