Chapter 9: Enter Mc.Hannibal
“Here we are, students!” exclaimed Mrs Hoffmann, excitedly in front of a large building. “Mc.Hannibal’s Incorporation!” All the students stared in amazement and many of them murmured excitedly. She added, “The finest business and industrial company in all of America!”
Max was with Jenny and Mikey as he stared at the building. In his opinion, he wasn’t at all impressed. Although it was rather large, he felt a bad feeling crept up his spine as he stared at the large and slightly intimidating building.
“I got to admit,” Jenny pointed out, “it is rather magnificient.” “Don’t get fooled.” Explained Mikey, with a displeased expression on his face. “That’s only his way of showing off his wealth.”
“Well, the man’s practically a walking goldmine.” David said. “The guy’s got over 10 companies all across the entire continent.” “Yeah,” added Jake, “I mean, anyone would kill to get into his position.” “What about you, Max?” he asked. Max looked unsure what to say.
“Well, I’m not sure how to say it,” he explained. “What do you mean, man?” asked David. “It’s just…” Max said. “I just have a bad feeling about this place, like something wrong.” he added, much to his friends’ confusion. “Max, it’s just a building” assured Jenny. “What wrong about that?” Max , however, still felt nervous
At that moment, the doors of the building swung open to reveal a large burly and yet plump man appeared at the doorway, dressed in a fine black businessman suit with multiple rings on his fingers. Accompaning him, was a slim man with thin glasses. “Ah, you must be Mrs Hoffmann of Weston High, aren’t you?” he said with a gustful tone.
“Oh, Mr Hannibal!” exclaimed Mrs Hoffmann, shaking his hand. “It’s a real honor to be here.” “Class,” she said, “this man here is Mr Hannibal himself, the CEO of Mc.Hannibal Incorporation.” Everyone gasped in amazement and wonder. Mc.Hannibal chuckled and exclaimed “Welcome, students of Weston High!”
Max was surprised, “That’s Mc.Hannibal?” he asked. “Yeah,” Mikey grumbled “the stuck-up, selfish bastard himself.” “Shhhh!” whispered Jenny “He’ll hear you.” Mikey just continued sulking.
Mc.Hannibal continued. “I must say, I’m proud to meet such fine young people as yourselves visiting my great empire, for I believe the young generation are the future of all humanity!” He added, “You all must have heard of me and my achievements to this country, so I am glad you young folk are visiting today.”
He gestured to the slim man, “My secretary, Slick, will provide you a tour of my great success.” “Now,” Mc.Hannibal said “if you excuse me, I have a meeting at 11am so I’ll leave Mr Slick to you.” With that, Hannibal walked back into the building. For some strange reason, Max felt that there was something wrong about him, just from his scent.
Mr Slick spoke up, “This way, students.” “I’ll be your tour guide for your field trip.” He added. Everyone followed Mr Slick, but Max continued to worry.
(25 mins later…)
“Over here, you can see our laptop manufacturing lab,” explained Mr Slick, showing them a window where the students could see a gigantic lab where technicians making laptops. “All of us take pride in our Mr Hannibal’s work and we all ensure efficient IT service for our customers.”
All the students looked on in amazement at the work, even Max was impressed by the service. “Woah!” exclaimed Bean, his eyes so wide they would almost pop out. “This is nothing like I ever seen!” “Yeah, well don’t get used to it.” Mikey added.
“Max, you should see this,” said Jenny. “Isn’t it amazing?” “Yeah,” Max answered. “Amazing.” “Now, students,” Mr Slick said, “if you can follow me, I’ll take you to our service desk”, leading the students down the hallway.
Max followed his friends and the rest of the class but then, he stopped and sniffed the air. Something didn’t smell right and he knew it. Following the scent, he dropped on all fours and sniffed the ground, like a fox or a hound tracking it’s prey.
He continued to sniff around until he heard voices around the corner. Out of the corner, he saw two men, one of them carrying a large container. There was something strange about that container and Max knew it. He saw them enter a door which had a sign that said “Authorized personnel only”, but that only made Max’s suspicion rise.
“Max!” he heard a voice, calling him. Max turned to see Jenny rushing towards him. “There you are!” she exclaimed. “You can’t just wander off like that!” “Why are you crouched like that?” she asked, confused. “Oh, sorry about that, Jenny.” Max apologized, standing up.
“When Mikey and I couldn’t find you,” Jenny explained, “we got worried and I decided to find you.” Max blushed in embarrassment. “Sorry, but I can explain..” he began. “Never mind.” Jenny sighed “Just don’t do that again.” She added. “Come on, the others are waiting for us.” With that, Jenny raced off with Max in tow.
Max, however looked back at the door. He was still suspicious, he didn’t know why. Maybe it was instinct but he was certain that there was something behind that door.
(Lunch time…)
“Well, I got to admit, this place is cool.” Explained Dennis, who decided to join Max and his friends for lunch break.
“Yeah, man!” added David “It’s like a place in a science fiction movie!”
Mikey didn’t say anything but just kept eating.
“Anyway, Max,” Jake asked. “why did you wander off like that?” Max looked up in surprise.
“Yeah, Max” Jenny added. “We’re lucky that Mrs Hoffmann didn’t know you were gone.” Max bowed his head in embarrassment, “Sorry about that.” He said “It’s just that I saw something.” he explained, much to his friends confusion.
“Woah, really?” asked Mikey “What was it?” Max looked nervously. “I’m not sure,” he explained, “but I noticed some men carrying something, a giant metal barrel of some sort.”
Jenny was puzzled, “That’s it?” she asked, “What’s wrong with that?” Max looked up at her. “Jenny, I’m serious” he spoke, a little firmly, much to her and the other’s surprise.
Max went on, “I have this strange feeling ever since we got here.” He added “It’s like something inside of me is telling me that something is wrong and I should run.” His friends were shocked, they’ve never seen Max like this.
“Yo, dude, it’s alright.” Dennis assured him. Mikey added “There’s nothing to be afraid about.” “I mean, Mr Hannibal can be a jerkass but everyone loves his work.” Jenny placed a hand on Max’s shoulder, her face was filled with worry. “Max, what’s wrong?”
Max sighed. “I’m not sure.” He said. “I’m just not sure.
