Chapter 12: The Wild Guardian Part 1
On Sunday, Max decided to visit Misoto in his shop. He wanted to find out more about what was happening to him and he believed that his grandfather could help him find the answers.
After taking the bus downtown, he walked along the streets to find his shop. When he found Misoto’s shop, he was surprised to find his friends already at there. “Hey, Max’s here!” David called out.
Everyone crowded around Max. “Hey, what are you guys doing here?” he asked. “Well, this is our favorite place to hang out during the weekends.” Jake answered “Yeah,” added Mikey “Besides, the food here is excellent.”
“So,” asked Jenny “what are you doing here? We weren’t expecting you.” Max sighed, bending his head slightly to the ground. “Well, I need to talk to my grandpa” Max’s friends were a little worried at Max’s sudden mood swing. “Max, is everything okay?” Jenny asked.
Max sighed “No, everything’s not okay.” “After what happened last night,” he added “I realized that there must be a reason I keep having these dreams and maybe Jii-chan can help me understand.” Everyone was taken aback by Max’s words. Jenny placed her hand on his shoulder “Hey, Max” she assured “Whatever it is, we are there for you.”
Max looked up in surprise. “You’re all not scared of me?” he asked. Mikey made a noise in surprise. “Afraid?” he replied, “Why would we be afraid of you.” “Uh, gee,” Max asked, sarcastically, “doesn’t the fact that I just turned into a white tiger not freak you out a little?” “Yeah,” Mikey said, before exclaiming “and that was the most awesome thing I’ve ever seen!!!”
Max was surprised. “Mikey’s right!” added David, excitedly. “You saved our lives and kicked some butt. That’s why we are here, we want to ask Misoto about you!” Max was moved by his friends’ loyalty. “Gosh, everyone…” he whispered. Jenny smiled “Besides,” she finished, “you were really brave last night.” Max scratched his head in embarrassment.
“Well, you kids are early.” The said kids turned to see Misoto walking towards them. “I was just about to open up.” “Hey, Jii-chan,” greeting Max. “Maxy!” Misoto exclaimed happily, “So glad your’re here. I could use some help to get the shop ready.” “Sure,” Max said “I can help with that.”
“Do you mind if we help?” asked Jenny. “Oh sure!” Misoto agreed “The more, the merrier!”
(10 mins later…)
“Urrgh…” David groaned “Who would have thought cleaning up would be so hard?”
Max and his friends had been helping to prepare Misoto’s shop for the day. It was quite tiring, cleaning the desk and chairs, mopping and sweeping the floors, getting the menus ready.
“So, what brings you all here?” Misoto asked. “Well,” Mikey replied, “we came to ask you about something about Max.” All at once, everyone looked up, especially Max. “What about Max?” Misoto asked, with a ‘fake’ smile.
“Actually, Jii-chan,” Max spoke up. “everyone wants to know about what happened to me yesterday.” “Oh, really?” Misoto asked, rather mischievously. “Jii-chan, I’m serious” Max said, “Strange things have been happening to me even after I moved here from Africa.” He added “I think it’s somehow connected to the dreams I’ve been having.”
Everyone looked at Max in worry, they never seen him so serious about this before. Misoto stared at Max “You know, Max,” he said “I told you that dreams are sometimes messages to people. However, only a rare few have those dreams.” Everyone stared at him in confusion. Misoto cleaned a glass with a napkin. “Thousands of years ago,” Misoto said “people had dreams in order to discover inner peace or to find answers to problems that they couldn’t understand.” He added “It was also a way they could communicate with spirits.”
Everyone was even more confused. Jake spoke up. “What are you talking about?” Misoto smiled again. “Well, that’s the problem.” He said, “Many people don’t have the time to stop and think. They are always rushing and worrying for no reason.”
Max said. “Jii-chan, with all due respect, if you want to tell me something, just tell me.” He stopped before asking “Is there something you want to tell me?”
Misoto placed the glass down and looked right at Max, with a raised eyebrow and a smirk on his face. “Is there something you want to hear?” he asked, before grinning.
“Okay…” David spoke up “He’s giving me the creeps.”
(Later that afternoon…)
Max and his friends found themselves in Misoto’s van, driving to who knows where they were going.
“Max’s, where’s your grandpa taking us?” asked Mikey. Max shrugged his shoulders “I’m not sure,” he admitted, “Jii-chan was always known for his eccentric attitude.” “Well,” Jenny muttered. “I hope we get out of here soon, wherever here is.”
Right on cue, the van stopped. “Alright, kids, we’re here!” Misoto called out. Everyone got out of the van before they got a good look where they were.
“Okay,” David asked, deadpanned “where are we?” They all found themselves staring a great forest, where pine trees and oaks stretched as tall as the eye could see.
“Mr Misoto, what are we doing here?” asked Jenny, confused. Misoto just smiled “Oh, don’t worry, kids, you’ll find out when we get there.” “Where?” Mikey asked. “Well, you’ll know it when you see it.” Misoto answered simply. “Now, come on. Let’s get walking.”
(20 mins later…)
“How long have we’ve been walking?” groaned David. “My feet are killing me.” “Oh, don’t be such a baby, David.” Jenny scolded. “You’re one of the most atheletic students in school.” “Yeah, yeah” grumbled David.
“I don’t mind.” Max smiled. “I love the forest, I like the peace and harmony.” He said. Mikey joked “Well, you did come from the jungle so it’s only natural.” “Anyway,” he added “where are your shoes?” Everyone stared at Max’s bare feet.
“It’s alright.” Max explained. “I don’t like shoes that much.” “Are you sure?” asked Jake. “You could step on something.” At that moment, Max stopped. “Guys, hold on.” “Hey, man.” Jake said “I was just saying …” “Shh!” Max hushed them. “Be quiet!” All at once, everyone stopped. “Max, what is it? What’s wrong?” Mikey asked.
“There’s something out there.” Max grimly said. Everyone soon became worried. “What do you mean?” David asked. “Rustle, Rustle~~~~” The sound of something moving through the bushes got their attention. A huge brown hulking shape was approaching.
When the figure appeared, everyone gasped when they saw it, a large grizzly bear was sniffing around. It moved closer with every step. Suddenly, it raised its head and caught sight of them.
“Nobody move.” Misoto said sternly. Max knew how strong a grizzly was, one blow from its paw could kill a man. He noticed how tense everyone else was, Jenny especially. “Rrrrrr….” The bear growled softly before approaching them slowly, making the other feel more nervous.
“Uh, guys. It’s coming over here” Mikey said nervously. “Keep quiet!” hissed Jenny. The bear continued to walk closer. “Okay, now what are we going to do?” David whispered, worriedly.
“Guys, I’ve got this.” Max assured them. “Max, what are you doing?” Jenny asked, nervously. To everyone’s shock, Max took off his shirt, exposing his bare chest and to their horror, he slowly walked toward the bear, who paused in surprise.
“Max, no!” Jenny exclaimed, horrified. “Dude, are you crazy?!” hissed Mikey. David rushed forward but Misoto held him back. “Everyone, don’t move, Max’s got this,” “What do you mean?!” Jenny almost screeched “He’s going to get himself killed!” Misoto smiled “Just watch and see.” Everyone turned to Max in great fear, who was now a few feet from the bear.
“Grroaaaarrrr…” the bear growled, showing its sharp canines. Max refused to back down and instead let out low growling sounds. “Grroarr, Grrrooaarrrr.” The bear’s eyes widened slightly. “Grrroaarrrr, Grrroaaaarrrr.” Max growled again.
Everyone stood by in shock. “Is it just me,” Mikey asked, “or is Max talking to the bear?” “I think so.” Jenny muttered, her eyes wide.
Max continued to make growling and bearlike sounds, making the bear more curious at the strange human who could understand him. Max slowly raised his hand, while still making sounds. “Urrrraaarggghh.” He moaned softly.
The bear stared at him then sniffed his hand. At that moment, the large beast nuzzled Max’s hand and moaned softly. Max smiled and stroked the bear’s huge head gently, as if it was a big dog. The bear let out a low growl and licked his cheek, making Max chuckle.
Nearby, all of Max’s friends were astounded to see him stroke a fierce grizzly bear as if it were a pet.
“Well I’ll be.” Muttered Jake, smiling.
“It’s amazing.” Mikey added.
Jenny stared in wonder. She wouldn’t have believed it if she had seen it. However, it was real. Her friend, Max was petting a wild grizzly bear.
“Uuurrroouugggh.” Max moaned gently. The bear stepped back a little and to everyone’s amazement, bowed its head at Max. Then, it turned and walked off back into the forest. Max smiled and waved goodbye to it before walking back to his friends. “It’s alright, everyone.” He assured “He’s gone now.”
“Dude, that was incredible!” exclaimed David. “Yeah!” agreed Mikey “You were petting a full grown grizzly bear!” Max smiled. “My parents always said I had a special connection to animals.” he told them “Back in the Congo, I made friends with many birds and animals.”
Jenny smiled. “Max, you were amazing.” She said, her cheeks were a lovely shade of pink. Misoto smiled as well. “I knew that there was something special about you, my boy,” He said “And I was right.” Everyone turned to Misoto. “I believe there is something more to your strong bond with all creatures. That’s why I brought you and your friends here, Max.”
“Jii-chan,” Max asked “what do you mean?” Misoto grinned. “Follow me and you will find out.” He said simply.
