Chapter 15: Training Part 1

“RRRRIIIINNNNNGGGGGG!!!!!!!” the bell rang in Weston High, starting the school. Students walked to their classes. Max, in particular, walked slightly slower than the rest. His mind was travelled back to yesterday.


(Flashback…)

The friends were all chatting away, excitedly about what had transpired, while walking back out of the cave. “That was the most awesomest thing I had seen in my life!” Mikey exclaimed.

“Yeah!” added David. “The way all those painting started floating in the air! It was like those freaky shaman scenes in Brother Bear!” “Max, what do you think?” he asked, before noticing Max looking at his fox totem. “Max, you okay, man?”

“Huh?” Max looked up at his friends, who were looking at him in concern. “Are you alright?” Jenny asked. “Yeah, it’s just there’s a lot on my mind lately.” He explained. “It’s okay, Max.” Jenny assured, smiling. “Besides, it’s not every day you learn that you are a legendary hero.” She joked.

“Yeah, that’s the thing.” Max explained. “I mean, I’m just a little shocked and overwhelmed by all of this.” “One minute, you’re an ordinary student, the next, you’re a legendary shapeshifting hero.” He added.

“Max, there’s nothing to worry about, dude.” Jake assured, placing an arm around his shoulders. “You have us to help you.” “You really want to do this?” Max asked. “It will be dangerous.”

“Not as dangerous as you’re going to be in.” Jenny argued. “You don’t have to do this alone, Max. We are here for you.” Max smiled “Thanks, Jenny.”

“Now, what are we going to do now?” David asked. “What do you mean?” Max asked back. “Come on, Max.” Mikey pointed out. “You turned into a white tiger, yesterday. Do you think you could transform into other animals as well?”

“Gee, I not sure of that myself.” Max answered. “Well, it’s time we find out.” David said, smiling, making everyone stare at him.

(Flashback end…)


David had asked him and the others to meet him in the gym after school. Max told his grandparents that he had extra gym practice in school. Nevertheless, Max was excited and a little nervous to try out his new powers. He quickened his pace to reach his class.

(At English class…)

Max was answering some blanks in a worksheet that Mrs Hoffmann gave to the rest of the class. He was able to answer them carefully and had just finished when he heard someone going “Pssst!” Max turned to see Mikey beside him, pointing to under his desk.

Max reached down and took out a crumpled piece of paper. He uncrumpled it to reveal a note which said, “Meet us in the gym at 3pm when school ends.” Max turned to Mikey, who grinned and flashed a thumbs-up. He nodded and placed the note in his backpack before Mrs Hoffmann could see it.


(Lunch time…)

The canteen was busy as usual, Max and his friends were eating their lunch, with the former devouring a delicious chicken chop. “So, jungle man, you ready for training later?” Mikey asked. Max nodded his head as he was still eating.

“Oh man!” David muttered. “Just thinking about makes me all excited!” “Hey, calm down!” Jenny whispered. “We can’t let anyone know about this.” “Why not, Jen?’ asked Mikey.

“Urrh.” Jenny replied in annoyance. “If people found out about Max’s power, they might take him away to do experiments on him.” “Oooo,” Mikey cringed at the thought. “right, sorry about that.”

“Hey, guys! What’s going?” a friendly voice called out. Everyone turned to see Bean heading towards them. “Hey, cuz!” Mikey said happily. “Glad to see you again.” “Hey, mind if I join you?” Bean asked. “Sure, little buddy!” David replied. “You can sit with me and Jake.”

As they sat down, they heard some excited talking. The friends noticed Rena, Jade, Shun and Louis having lunch, while happily chatting away with other students. “Well, it seems Rena is popular as always.” Max said.

“Yeah,” David added. “the student council is the most respected throughout the entire school.” “The best students in school are selected and Rena’s the best of them.” “I see.” Max turned back and was surprised to see Harold and Bruce with the student council. “Is that Bruce and Harold?”

“Yeah,” Jenny replied. “both of them are members of the student council as well.” Max was surprised. “Really?” he asked. “I didn’t know that.” “So, guys, do you guys have any plans after school?” asked Bean. “We can go to the library.”

“Actually, Bean, the rest of us are going to workout in the gym.” “Oh, okay, I understand.” Bean said before returning to his lunch. “Mikey,” Max whispered. “are you sure you want to keep this from him?” “After all, he’s your cousin.”

“I know,” Mikey whispered. “but, I don’t want him to get dragged into this. The less people know about this, the better.” Max nodded and continued eating.


(6 hours later…)

Throughout the rest of the day, Max concentrated on his lessons and wrote down some notes to help him remember. Still, all the while, mentally preparing for the school to end.

Finally, school was over and many students were leaving, though some stayed for extra classes or project work. Max walked along the hall before reaching the gym.

As he entered the gym, he found Mikey, David and Jake already there. “Max, you’re here!” Mikey exclaimed. “Did anyone follow you?” he asked. Max looked behind him and shook his head. “No, I don’t think so.” Everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

“Good.” “So, are you ready for some training?” asked David. “Training?” asked Max. “Yeah” replied David. “I mean, since you are the Wild Guardian, you have to find out what skills you have.” “Well, okay.” Max said.

“Hey, Max.” a voice said. Max turned around and to his surprise, saw Jenny, wearing a taekwondo gi, with a black belt around her waist. Jenny smiled. “How about we start with some combat practice?” she asked. Max stared for a moment before grinning. “Alright.”

Jenny smirked, as they walked to the center of the gym while the others sat on the bleaches. She got into a fighting stance and called out “Just so you know, I’m not gonna hold back just because I’m a girl, so give me your best shot.”

“Sure thing, Jenny.” Max answered back. Mikey lifted up his arm and shouted. “Ready? Hajime!” before swinging it down. “Yaahhhh!!!!” Jenny yelled, before charging towards Max. “Woah!” Max cried out, as Jenny lashed out a punch and a high kick which he barely managed to dodge.

“Come on, Max!” David cheered. “Yeah, show us your moves!” Jake added. Jenny continued to unleash a barrage of taekwondo techniques, such as punches, kicks, upper and lower cuts at him. All Max could do was dodge, block and unsuccessfully land some hits on her while often got punched or kicked all over.

“What’s the matter, Max?” Jenny taunted, when she saw how tiring he was. “Are you getting slow or what? Where’s your wild spirit of yours?” With that, she threw a punch at Max’s face. However, to her surprise, Max blocked her fist and when he stared at her, Jenny was shocked to see his eyes had turned gold.

“You want to see my wild spirit?” Max asked. “You got it!” At that, Max landed a solid punch to Jenny’s gut, making her fly a few feet away. “Gaaahh!” Jenny cried, placing a hand on her stomach. “ROOOOAAAAAARRRRRHHHHHH!!!!!!” a terrifying roar sounded from Max. Jenny and the others turned to Max and to their shock, Max started to change.

His shirt ripped open, his arms and legs became more muscular, white fur and stripes grew all over his body, claws and fangs appeared and a tail grew from his behind but he continued to stand up right. His totem glowed again and a golden mist appeared, forming the image of a tiger around him. Jenny could help but stare in shock at Max and blush at the sight of his muscular chest.

Max now looked a lot like a humanoid version of the white tiger from before. “Now, let’s dance!” he growled. With a flash, Tiger-Max brought a strong uppercut to Jenny’s face.

Now, the tables were turned. Tiger-Max delivered all types of martial art like attacks on Jenny, who was trying desperately to defend herself but was slowly being overwhelmed.

“Dude, this is incredible!” David exclaimed. “Yeah, Max’s gone wild!” Mikey added in excitement. Jenny, by now, was getting exhausted. “How did you do that?” she asked.

Tiger-Max smirked. “All creatures have their own fighting techniques,” he said, “and here’s one of them!” Before Jenny could react, Tiger-Max leapt forward in blinding speed, clenched his clawed hands together and cried out "Tiger Palm Strike!!" before he shot them forward with his palms wide open to Jenny’s stomach.

“Aaahhhh!!!!” Jenny flew through the air and fortunately, landed on a large Styrofoam block. “Jenny!” everyone cried out. Max blinked out of his wild instincts and to his horror, saw Jenny lying on her side, groaning. “Oh man!” he thought in worry, and rushed forward, switching back to his human form.

“Jen!” Mikey exclaimed, as he and the others jumped out and rushed forward as well. Max was the first to reach her. “Jenny, are you alright!” he asked worriedly. Jenny looked at Max and smirked. “Never been better.” She said.

“Yo, Jen.” David said, as the guys went over. “You okay?” Jenny slowly got to her feet. “Yeah, it’s going to take a lot more to take me down.” “Jenny,” Max said. “I’m sorry, I hope I didn’t hurt you.”

Jenny giggled “No need to apologise, Max.” she assured. “You were amazing.” Max was surprised at her words. “Yeah, dude!” Mikey added. “You went totally animal!” Max smiled sheepishly. “Gee, thanks.” "Besides," Jenny smiled, slyly. "You look cute topless" Max blushed at her words.

“So, Max,” David asked, smirking “you ready for some more?” Max gave a feral grin. “Bring it on!” he exclaimed.
