Chapter 16: Training Part 2: Martial Arts
Max was ready for today’s training. Throughout the rest of yesterday, the friends practiced some basic kung fu training with Max. Surprisingly, Max excelled in it, given the fact that he was a jungle boy. Before leaving, David said they would do it again every day after school, which everyone, even Max agreed.
Today started like any other, lessons as usual, chats with friends like Dennis or Bean, and occasional arguments between Jenny and Sophie. However, when school ends, Max headed off for the gym where everyone was.
Speaking off which, Max entered the gym where everyone was waiting. “Glad you showed up, Max.” Jake said, grinning. “Hey, I wouldn’t miss this chance.” Max smiled back, taking off his shirt.
“Good!” David exclaimed, bringing out some punching bags, long wooden poles and combat training dummies. “I borrowed these from the boxing and martial arts clubs.” He explained. “They could be useful.”
“So, Max, you ready for some practice?” Mikey asked. Max nodded in determination. “You bet!”
(5 mins later…)
All of the punching bags and dummies were setup. “All right, Jenny and I will teach you some martial arts first, Max,” David told him. “while Jake and Mikey will teach you boxing and wrestling.” “Sure, David.” Max replied, nodding his head.
“Okay, Max.” Jenny said. “Let’s get started!” Max went over to the dummies. “First thing to know, Max” Jenny said. “Kung Fu requires discipline, patience, a still hand and a steady heart.” “You have to learn to remain calm and wait for your opponent to expose himself.” As she spoke, she stood in front of a training dummy and took a fighting stance. “Hiyah!” she cried, before throwing some punches and kicks at the dummy.
Max was amazed, he had never seen such skills before. David added “Kung Fu is just one of the many martial arts in the world.” “Here,” he said, while smirking “let me show you how it’s done.” Jenny rolled her eyes in amusement and stepped aside. David stood in front of the dummy, took a deep breath, before screaming “Rraaaahhhhyaaahhhhhh!!!”
David pulled off various types of striking moves, and his punches and kicked looked much stronger. “So,” he asked, after he had finished. “what do you think about that?” Jenny groaned, “Urrgh, do you always have to show off like that?” she asked.
“What?” David complained. “I’m just want to show him some of my favourite moves.” Jenny just rolled her eyes again. “Okay, Max” she asked, turning to Max, “you want to have a go?”
“Okay.” Max walked over and stood over at the dummy. “Okay, breathe.” Max thought, taking a deep breath. “Focus and concentrate.” Max took a stance and focused. Unknown to him, his fox totem glowed again and a golden aura started to flow around him.
“Uh, Max?” Jenny asked, she and David stepped back. Jake and Mikey who were practicing some boxing, got distracted and to their shock, they saw Max with the golden aura surrounding him.
“Focus.” Max repeated. As he did, Max started to become more muscular, his body grew black fur, his hands became slightly bigger and each of his feet grew opposable toes. The golden aura suddenly took the form of a gorilla, hooting and beating its chest. “Now!” Max’s eyes shot open, revealing his golden pupils again. “HHHHRRRRAAAAGGGGGHHH!!!!!” he roared, before shooting his fist.
“BAAAMMM!!!!” the dummy was sent flying across the gym and slammed against the wall. “OOOHHH! AAAAHHH! AAAAHHHH!!!!!” Gorilla-Max howled, while beating his chest with the palms of his hands.
“Holy s***…” David whispered in shock, while Jenny stared wide eyed. “Dude!” Mikey and Jake exclaimed in shocked unison. Max switched back to his human form. “So, how did I do?” he asked, turning to his friends.
“Urrh, guys?” he asked, “what’s with the faces?” The reaction was instantaneous. “That… was…freakin awesome!!!!!!” Mikey yelled in excitement, much to Max’s surprise.
“Dude, that was amazing!” Jake added. “You turned into a half-ape and smashed that dummy to kingdom come!” Max blinked in confusion. “I did?”
“Yeah, Max!” David exclaimed. “How did you do that?!” “I just focused and concentrated.”
Max answered. Jenny chuckled. “Well, it looks like you got combat techniques down. Now,” she gestured over to the wooden poles, “let’s try balancing.”
(5 mins later…)
Max found himself, balancing on two wooden poles, 12 feet high. “Uh, how is this going to help?” he asked, looking down. “A good warrior must have good balance.” Jenny explained, balancing on two other poles, a distance away from him. “Your opponent will always try and a way to knock you off your feet.” “You ready, Max?” she asked, bringing on a fighting stance, again
Max smirked, “Give me your best shot.” All at once, they charged at each other. Jenny and Max pulled off all sorts of kung fu moves. Below them, the others cheered on.
“Come on, Max!” Jenny shouted. “Show me that wild side of yours!” Max grinned ferally. “I’ve got more wild spirit than you realise.” In a blink of an eye, Max straight up vanished.
“Wh.. what?” Jenny blinked in astonishment. She looked around but could not find him. “Jenny, behind you!” Mikey shouted. “RRRRAAAAHHHGGGGHHHH!!!!!” Jenny managed to leap away from whatever attacked her. Her eyes widened in shock.
Right before her, was Max, but a whole lot different. His whole body had become muscular again but looked more cat-like. Sleek black fur appeared all over his body. Claws, fangs and a tail appeared again and if Jenny looked closely, she could see black rosettes all over his body. The golden aura surrounding him took the form of a panther growling and snarling.
Jenny snapped out of her stupor. “Okay, Max, if you’re going all out, then so am I!” she exclaimed, charging towards him. “Guuuurrruuuaaaaagggghhhh!!!” Panther-Max growled and bounded towards her on all fours. “Take this!” she yelled, throwing a punch. However, Panther-Max just leapt over her and gave her a kick on the back.
“Urrgh!” Jenny gasped, before turning around and continuing the battle. The two of them continued for hours, but it seemed that Panther-Max was slowly gaining the upper hand.
“Impressive, Max,” Jenny smirked, “but let’s seen you try this!” With that, she dashed forward and gave Panther-Max a swift kick in the gut. “Ooooffff!!!” Max groaned, as he switched back to human form and was sent flying through the air.
“I’m not done yet!” Max yelled. Jenny was surprised, she did not expect him to recover so quickly. She also did not expect what happened next. To everyone’s shock, Max’s hands and feet turned into bird feet with talons, brown feathers grew all over his body with white feathers growing on his head, his mouth and nose fused together into a sharp, hooked beak, tail feathers grew from his behind and large wings sprouted of his back. As he did, the golden aura took the form of an eagle.
With that, he stopped in mid-air, spreading his wings out wide and flapping them. “Shhrrrriiieeeaaaaarrrkkkkk!!!” Eagle-Max screeched. “Holy…!” Jake exclaimed. “He’s flying!” Jenny stared in amazement. “This ends now!” Before Jenny could react, she felt a large clawed kick to her gut, which sent her flying across the room.
“Aaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!” Jenny screamed. “Jenny!” the others screamed. Just at that moment, Jenny felt herself stop in mid-air and someone carrying her. To her shock, she found Eagle-Max carrying her princess-style while still in the air. “M-M-Max…” she muttered, her cheeks red. “Jenny, are you okay?” Eagle-Max asked, snapping her out of your stupor. “Yeah.” Jenny whispered.
Eagle-Max gently flew down and placed Jenny on the ground, before switching back to his human form. The others ran over to them. “Dude,” David exclaimed “I don’t know what’s more awesome!” “The fact you can smash a dummy across a room or the fact that you can fly!” Max was surprised. “I flew?” he asked. “Yeah, you did!” Jake replied, excitedly.
Jenny grinned. “Well, I must say, Max, you’ve got great balance.” “Gee, Jenny, thanks.” Max smiled, making her blush again.
“Okay!” Mikey spoke up. “Now, it’s our turn!” Max looked at Mikey. “Time for some boxing practice!” he added, handing out some boxing gloves.
