Chapter 18: Keeping Secrets
In a tall and dark looking building at night, Mc.Hannibal was in a bad mood. “What do you mean, it’s not ready?!” he yelled at a cowering co-worker.
“I’m sorry, sir,” the poor man tried to explain, “but, the site for your new factory is near Yellowstone National Park!” “It’s one of America’s famous national sights and people will be really upset if you build a factory near it!”
“I don’t care!” Mc.Hannibal shouted, pounding his fist on his desk, scaring the poor man. “All I care about is making sure that my business grows!” “I’m not going to let a bunch of tree-loving losers get in the way of my ambition!”
“Yes, sir! Of Course!” the worker bowed quickly. “Now, get back and finish your job!” Mc.Hannibal yelled, causing the man to rush out of the room and closing the door with a loud “slam!”
“Urrgh…” Mc.Hannibal leaned against his chair. “I’m surrounded by idiots.” He groaned. “It’s hard to find good help these days.” He muttered to himself. He turned to look out at his large window behind him, giving him a good view of the city.
“No matter.” Mc.Hannibal smirked. “My business empire is expanding tremendously.” “I still have big plans for it.” At that moment, he noticed his glass ball ornament on his desk was glowing a deep hellish red. He immediately turned to look at it. “You called for me?” he asked.
The glass ball then revealed a white demonic face that resembled a skull. “I came to see how you were doing.” The face spoke, demonically. “You seemed to have trouble with your servants.” Mc.Hannibal snorted. “Trouble is too poor a word for me to use.”
“I must admit, though,” the face continued. “you have quite the ambition.” Mc.Hannibal grinned. “Oh, it’s nothing, much.” The face spoke again. “However, I’m afraid we’ve got trouble coming our way.” “Trouble, what kind?” he asked, “I sensed a new Wild Guardian has been chosen.”
“Wild Guardian?” Mc.Hannibal asked. “You mean that story about the shapeshifting warrior?” “Yes, and he will be trouble for us.” The face growled. “It’s all thanks to the Wild Guardian, that I’m was imprisoned and lost almost all of my powers.”
“Don’t worry.” Mc.Hannibal assured. “If he should ever show himself, I’ll sent some off my men after him.” “We’ll see.” The face muttered. “Once I have my powers back, I’ll have my revenge on the Wild Guardian and rule this world once again!”
“Don’t forget about me.” Mc.Hannibal added. “You promised to make me immortal.” “I assure you, Mr Hannibal,” the voice said. “you will have your reward as long as you fufill your part of the bargain.” With that, the face disappeared and the glass ball stopped glowing.
Mc.Hannibal chuckled evilly to himself. “Even if there is a new Wild Guardian, he is no match for me.” “We shall see if this great warrior is nothing but a mere fairytail.” He added, his eyes glinting evilly.
(At school…)
It was an ordinary day in Weston High, students were either heading to their classes or chatting away at lunch. Max, in particular, was in science class, doing an experiment with Mikey and Bean.
“Make sure you pour in the right amount of sulfuric acid into the sodium hydroxide.” The teacher explained. “Just be sure that you’re wearing your lab glasses to protect your eyes from any chemical spills.”
Max concentrated hard and managed to create sodium sulfate. All of a sudden, Bean spoke up, “So, guys, have you heard the news?” he asked. “News, what news?” Mikey asked. “Lately, some students have been hearing strange noises around the school during dusk.” Bean explained.
At his words, Max and Mikey froze with their eyes wide. “What kind of strange sounds?” Max asked, a little nervous. “I don’t know,” Bean said “it sounded scarcely like animal sounds like a gorilla bellow or an eagle screech.”
“Maybe, they’re just hearing things.” Mikey told him, also nervous. Bean frowned. “I was certain about that.” Max and Mikey breathed a sigh of relief, but looked at each other in worry. They need to tell the others about this.
(20 mins later…)
It was almost the end of Mathematics class. Mr Lockwood had given a practice paper to his class and strictly forbade any cheating. Everyone knew better, for he was watching them with his hawk-like eyes.
Max was able to answer to answer his questions well, but he was still worried about what been said. “I hope no one else know about this.” He thought to himself. “It’s going to be difficult keeping a secret this big.”
As he finished his paper, he quietly waited for the timer to end, all the while checking his answers to make sure he answered them correctly. Mr Lockwood was not fond of his students doing nothing, even after they finished their papers.
“DING! DING!” the timer rung. “Time’s up, students!” Mr Lockwood called out. “Hand in your papers now, but any students leaving a single blank page will be given 3 hours of remedial class. Once done, you may leave.”
Everyone handed in their papers orderly and prepared to leave. However, before Max, Jenny and Mikey could leave, Mr Lockwood said. “You three, stay behind. I would like to have a word with the three of you.” The three friends froze and looked at each other in fear.
“Uhm, did we do some wrong, sir?” Mikey asked nervously. “Of course not, Mr Michael.” Mr Lockwood answered. “I’m here to ask you about something.”
“What’s that?” Jenny asked. “Well, Miss Bates,” Mr Lockwood explained. “Mr Fist told me that the captains of the boxing clubs and martial arts clubs have been complaining about damaged equipment.” The three friends slightly paled. “Damaged equipment?” Max asked.
“Yes.” Mr Lockwood said. “Ever since, you’ve been borrowing their equipment, they have noticed that most of their equipment have large scratch marks on them, like some animal made them and some have even been broken.” The friends looked at each other, if they were worried, they hid it well.
“Do you children have anything to do with this?” Mr Lockwood asked, leaning forward, narrowing his eyes. Mikey and Jenny tried really hard not to piss their pants while Max remained as calm as possible. They told him that Mr Lockwood was one of the strictest teached in Weston High, having expelled students who could not meet up to his standards.
“Actually, Mr Lockwood,” Mikey explained. “we were practicing marital arts based on animals, and we went a little too far with training.” “Yeah.” Jenny added, “We’re sorry that we damaged them. We can help pay for it.” Mr Lockwood stared at them, intently. “Really?” he asked.
Max decided to speak up. “I assure you, Mr Lockwood,” he said. “we will take responsibility for the damages.” Mr Lockwood sighed and sat back on his chair. “That won’t be nessessary, Mr Yamato. The staff will handle this.”
“Given your explanations, I am willing to let it silde.” Mr Lockwood said. “However, let’s hope this will never happen again.” He added before finishing in a low and dangerous tone. “Is that understood?” The three friends nodded, with Mikey saying. “Yes, Mr Lockwood.”
“Good, you may leave now.”
(5 mins later…)
“That was a close one.” Jenny whispered, as they walked down the hall. “You tell me,” Mikey added. “Math may be my favourite subject, but Mr Lockwood is somebody you don’t want to mess with.”
“So, now what are we going to tell the others?” Max asked sadly. “How will we continue training?” Jenny patted Max comfortably. “Don’t worry, Max. We’ll think of something.”
“Still,” Max added. “I don’t know how long we can keep my secret. Someone is bound to discover it sooner or later.” Mikey nodded. “Don’t worry, Max. Until that happens, we have to find out more about your powers.”
Max knew that his friend was right. However, he knew they couldn’t keep training in the gym if he would damage more equipment. Suddenly, an idea popped in his head. “Guys!” he said in excitement, much to his friends’ surprise. “I’ve got an idea!”
