Chapter 41: Power of Darkness and Despair!
“Hahahahahah!!!!” Grendal roared in laughter. “Is that all you got?!” Team W.I.L.D were at their wits end. It turned out that fighting an ogre was much harder than they thought. Five minutes have passed and they were starting to get exhausted.
Grendal looked no better, he was covered in gashes from Jake’s spear and large burns from David’s gauntlets but he was still standing strong and tall. “You mere mortals have such strong resilience.” Grendal taunted. “However, you all seem to be on your last legs.”
“Come on, guys!!” David exclaimed, his gauntlets glowing. “We can take him!” “I’m not sure, David!” Jenny added. “I don’t know how much longer we can hold on!!” “Smart girl.” Grendal smirked. “It’s a shame you all won’t be leaving here alive.”
“No way, punk!” Jake retorted. “We’re not going down so easily!” “Jake’s right!” Tiger-Max added. “We’ve got to be strong!” “Yeah!” Mikey agreed. “If we’re going down, we’re going down fighting!!”
“This ends now, boy!” With that, Grendal charged forward brandishing his club. “I don’t think so!” Tiger-Max roared, bounding at him on all fours. “MAX!!!” His friends screamed in terror.
The young tiger-hybrid and the ogre charged forward. “DIE, WILD GUARDIAN!!!!!” Grendal roared at the top of his lungs, raising his club high in the air. Just before, Grendal could swing it down at him, Tiger-Max suddenly slid down and kicked Grendal’s legs. “Arrrgh!!!” Grendal roared, losing his balance and toppling over like a tree.
“CRASH!!!!” Grendal fell face-down to the ground. Before he could get up on his feet, Tiger-Max leapt in the air and his right arm glowed brightly. “FERAL PAW STRIKE!!” With a loud roar, Tiger-Max trust his fist forward and a fist of pure aura punched Grendal right on the head.
“Yeah, Max!” Team W.I.L.D hurried over as Tiger-Max dropped in front of them and shifted back to his human form. “You okay?” Jenny asked. “Yeah. I am.” Max replied. “So, did you get him?” Jake asked.
Max looked behind him at the fallen ogre. “I’m not sure.” He admitted. “Ogres are quite resilient.” “Well, guys,” Mikey added. “let’s not stick around to find out!” He lifted up a small egg-like object. “SMOKE BOMB!!” With that, he flung it to the ground and a huge puff of smoke billowed up.
Grendal snarled as he got back to his feet. When he looked around, he found no one. “They got away.” He growled. “I’ll have to summon new soldiers.” He lifted his clawed hand and a portal appeared. As he stepped through, he muttered, “Wherever you go, Wild Guardian, wherever you hide, I will find you.”
(7 mins later…)
“You think he followed us?” David asked. “I don’t think so.” Jake replied. “I guess we got him good.” The team had stopped at an alleyway on the street near the park.
“Well, I bet that giant muscle brain will think twice before messing with Team W.I.L.D!!!” Mikey exclaimed pumping his fist in the air. “By the way, Mikey,” Jenny asked. “what did you throw?”
Mikey grinned. “My latest inventions.” He explained. “Smoke bombs, like the one ninjas use in anime or cartoons.” “They would be handy in distracting those demons or making a quick escape.”
“Woah, you really made smoke bombs?” Jake asked. Mikey nodded. “Yep! I also took the liberty of making a weapon of my own but it’s still in development.” “Really, what is it?!” asked David. “Sorry, it’s a surprise!” Mikey smirked.
“Oh, come on, Mikey! Tell us!!!” David asked. “No way!” Mikey replied. As the two continued to talk with Jake laughing at their expense, Jenny noticed Max staring back into the park. Worried, she walked over and placed her hand on his shoulder. “Max, are you okay?” she asked.
“No, Jenny.” Max replied. “I’m not. After what happened, I’m not sure.” “Max, what’s wrong?” Jenny asked. “That monster, I could barely keep up with him. My tiger form can only fight him evenly.”
“Hey, don’t worry about him.” Jenny rubbed his shoulder and smiled gently. “If he ever shows around again, we’ll be ready for him.” Max turned to her. “Really?” he asked.
“Of course!” Jenny replied. “Besides, we’re kinda off already targets too so you practically stuck with us.” Max smiled. Jenny was right. With friends by his side, he would be ready if Grendal ever dared to show his face again.
“So, guys?” Jake asked. “Now that we escaped, why don’t we handle about our science project?”
(In a dark, abandoned warehouse…)
“Forgive me, master.” Grendal apologized, bowing low in front on a small red glowing orb where a pale, demonic face was shown. “I found the Wild Guardian but I wasn’t able to kill him. I failed.”
“Failed?” The deep, demonic voice of the Devourer replied, before chuckling. “Did you not see how he was lured into my trap?” Grendal was confused by his words. The Devourer added. “My plan was to test if the Wild Guardian acted as I predicted.”
“Actually, you’ve done your job well, Grendal.” He concluded. “You helped me to discover one of the Wild Guardian’s weaknesses.” “What is it?” Grendal asked. The Devourer grinned, showing his sharp fangs. “His compassion.”
“With that, we can use it to our advantage.” “How, master?” Grendal asked. “Hold out your club, Grendal.” The Devourer replied. “I have a gift for you.” Surprised but obedient, the ogre lifted his club and held it out to the orb.
At that moment, a strange red mist billowed out of the orb and engulfed the club. It started to glow and to Grendal’s amazement, the top of his club started to glow in a hellish red. “Master, what magic is this?” he asked.
“I have imparted some of my magic into your club.” The Devourer explained. “It is made of pure darkness.” “Once any human is infected by it, they will become mindless servants to us.”
“Master, I don’t deserve this kind of power.” Grendal started to say, his eyes glinting with excitement. “There’s no need to thank me.” The Devourer grinned. “The Wild Guardian is always known for his compassion to all living things.”
“He would never dare to kill his fellow human beings.” He added. “With that, disposing him will be much easier.” Grendal grinned. “Thank you, Master. I’ll be sure to bring you his head as a trophy.”
“Good, Grendal. I hope you will not disappoint me.” With that, the red orb swirled and disappeared in a flash of darkness. Grendal stared at his glowing club and grinned madly. “Say your prayers, Wild Guardian, for your end is near.”
