Chapter 43: The Walking Dread!!!
Jenny found herself in a dark ally, downstreet. She leaned against a wall and panted heavily. “Damn…” she muttered. “That was close.” “I hope the others got my call.” She added. Jenny looked around cautiously. “Coast is clear.” She thought. “No zombies around.”
“Ssssshhhhrrrriiiiieeeeeaaaaakkkkk!!!!!” A loud screech sounded above her. Jenny looked up into the sky and saw a bald eagle soaring in the sky, it’s wings stretching out. She was surprised at first, bald eagles never venture into the city. She smiled widely, knowing who it was.
“Max!” she called out. “Max, down here.” High in the sky, Eagle-Max searched the street, his sharp eyes looking around. If it was in the plains or forest, he could have spotted her easily. In the street, however, it was like looking for a needle in a haystack.
It was a good thing, eagles have good hearing too, as Eagle-Max heard Jenny calling him. He turned his head and saw her waving at him. Instantly, he tucked his wings and gently descended towards her.
As soon as he neared her, he switched back to his human form and landed right in front of her. “Jenny, you okay?” he asked. He got his answer when Jenny threw her arms around him and hugged him so tightly, he seemed that her arms were iron bands.
“Oh, Max!!” she exclaimed. “You will not believe the day I had!” “Jenny!” Max and Jenny perked up. Max looked around the corner and breathed a sigh of relief when the others arrived. “Guys, over here!!” He waved over to them.
When the others arrived, Jenny immediately pulled them into the allyway. “Woah, Jenny!” David exclaimed. “What’s your worry?” “Did anyone follow you?” Jenny asked. “No, it was just us.” Mikey replied.
“Anyway,” Jake asked. “what happened? What took you so long?” Jenny looked around the corner and the street cautiously. “We can’t let them see us.” She explained. “Can’t let who see us??” Max asked.
(5 mins of explanations later…)
“WHAT?!” all the boys screamed. “Grendal’s got an army of zombies?!” David exclaimed. “There’re not zombies!” Jenny explained. “There’re ordinary people!” “Grendal somehow, infected them with some kind of virus or dark magic or something.” She added.
“So now what?” asked Mikey. “Is there any way to save those people?” Jenny sighed. “I don’t know.” She replied. “I was only concerned in getting out of there.” “Maybe if we can destroy his club, it could break the spell.” Jake offered.
“I’m not sure.” David added. “What if we’re not careful and get infected as well?” “Well, maybe I can build something to counteract the affect.” Mikey offered “Well, any case, we should get back to my house.” Max offered. “We’ll be able to come up with a plan.”
“So, what are we waiting for?” Jake asked. “Let’s get out of here!” “Well, it’s just a few feet from the nearest subway.” David added. “Maybe we can find cover or come up with a plan.” Max looked around and sniffed the air. “We should be careful.” He warned. “I can smell evil all around us.”
“How do you know what evil smells like?” Jake asked, confused. Max shrugged. “I don’t know, maybe like rotten eggs or something.” He replied. “Well, if we’re fast enough,” David explained. “we could make it to the subway.”
“Alright.” Max replied. “The coast is clear, we should move now.” With that, team W.I.L.D hurried out of the corner and raced down the street.
(5 mins later…)
“How far away is the subway is?” Jake asked. “Don’t worry, it’s just further down the street.” Jenny replied, gesturing to a junction on the road. The team quickly picked the pace and ran forward. Suddenly, Max stopped and raised his hand. “Guys, wait!!” He exclaimed. “Max, what’s wrong?” Mikey asked.
Max lifted his head to one side, as if he was listening to something. “Do you hear that?” he asked. His friends were confused. “Hear what?” David asked. “Uuuuurrrrrrrrhhhhhhhh...” a low moaning sound was heard. The friends looked up in surprise. “Oh no.” Jenny muttered. The team’s eyes widened in shock when they saw what looked like two normal citizens approaching them, a man and a woman.
However, they looked anything but normal. Their skin was pale, ghostly white and their eyes were black with red pupils. Each of them had an emotionless expression on their faces. They were coming toward them, with their arms outstretched. “What the f*ck?” Jake muttered.
“What happened to them?!” Mikey asked in shock. “Grendal!!” Jenny replied. “He infected them with his dark magic that puts them under his control.” Max felt his blood boil at the thought. “That bastard will pay for that!” he thought.
“Dude, that’s sick!” David exclaimed. “Quick!” Jenny added. “We have to go before more arrive!” The team hurried across the road junction. “How many of them are there?” Mikey asked.
“How about that many?!” Jake pointed. More zombiefied people were approaching them, their arms stretching out to them. Max narrowed his eyes. “I can smell Grendal’s evil magic from them.” “Oh man!!” Mikey exclaimed. “It’s just like The Walking Dead!!” “They’re gonna eat our brains and turn us into one of them!!”
“Calm down!” David shouted. “We’re all going to survive this!” “Rrrrrrraaaaauuuuuaaaahhhhhh!!!!!” the zombiefied citizens groaned louder and advanced. “Come on, guys!” Jake added, brandishing his spear. “We can take them!”
“No!!” Jenny cried. “We can’t hurt them!” “They’re still innocent people!” She added. “Jenny’s right!” Max agreed. “We just have to find a way to break Grendal’s control over them.” “Well, what can we do?!” Jake demanded. “I’ve got it!” David exclaimed. He put on his gauntlets and powered them up.
“Hey, suckers!!” he shouted. “Here’s something for you!” With that, he clapped his hands with all his might. “BOOM!” A loud shockwave burst around them, making all the zombiefied citizens to fly a distance away and knocking them down.
“Wow, I wish I can do that.” Max commented. “Says the guy who can shapeshift into any animal.” David replied, jokingly. “Guys!” Jenny exclaimed in annoyance. “We should get going now!” With that, the team raced off and left their pursuers far behind.
Unknown to them, from atop a building, Grendal was watching the whole scene with a sick grin on his face. “Run all you want, Wild Guardian.” He muttered. “You and your friends are only delaying your demise.” He added, “Soon, you and your friends will be under my control and the Wild Guardian’s legacy will be over, PERMANENTLY…”
