Chapter 51: Subway Battle
The sun was shining high above the sky but the street was deathly quiet. We find Max walking along a deserted street. No sound was heard except the wind. Max silently walked across the street, looking around.
Suddenly, he stopped and his eyes became dilated. He sniffed the air and snarled softly. “He’s here.” He thought. He called out. “Alright, Grendal!” “I’m all alone,” he added. “no friends, no weapons, nothing!!”.
He continued. “You said you wanted to destroy the Wild Guardian, so here’s your chance!!” “COME ON! SHOW YOURSELF!!” He yelled. “COME OUT AND WE’LL SETTLE THIS!!!”
“Uuurrrruuuuhhhhh!!!!” Max’s sharp ears already picked up the sound of groaning and felt footsteps on the ground. “Well, well, you’ve finally decided to give yourself up.” Max breathed deeply and turned around.
Right behind him was Grendal, carrying his glowing red club and an army of zombified citizens at his heels. “How noble.” Grendal taunted. “You just saved me the trouble of sending my army out to search for you.”
“Using innocent people as bait to lure me out.” Max bravely replied, glaring bitterly at Grendal. “That’s low, but I would expect that from a demon like you.” Grendal chuckled “You flatter me boy, but I’m afraid this is the end of the line for you.”
“Oh, and don’t worry about your friends.” The ogre added. “They will all be joining you in hell really soon.” “So, you’re going set your zombie army at me or are you just going to bore me to death with your talking?” Max asked, tauntingly.
A vein popped on Grendal’s forehead and he growled softly. “As imputent as ever, brat.” He snarled. “In fact, I don’t have to send my army to deal with you.” He concluded, giving a sick grin. “I want the pleasure of destroying you myself.”
“Good.” Max smirked. “Smiling at your demise?” Grendal asked. “I like to see that.” “Oh, I’m not smiling at my demise.” Max replied. “It’s yours!!” Before Grendal knew what happened, Max threw a small smokebomb at him and it exploded in his face.
“Arrgh!!!” Grendal howled as thick smoke covered his eyes and filled his nostrils. “If you want me, come and get me!” Max yelled. “You accursed human!!!” Grendal roared, rubbing his eyes. When the smoke cleared, Grendal caught a glimpse of Max racing off.
“Damn you, Wild Guardian!!” The ogre roared. “You just signed your death warrant!!!” He turned to his army of zombies. “Stay here!” he commanded. “I’ll be the one to kill the Wild Guardian!!” With that, he charged off after Max.
(5 mins later…)
“Damn!” Max mentally cursed. “I never knew ogres could run so fast!” He was now running as fast as his legs could carry him. Fortunately, thanks to his jungle training, he could run as fast as a cheetah.
“Come boy!!!” He heard Grendal roar after him. “Let’s end this!!!!” Max didn’t bother to look back as he could feel the ground shake with every footstep from the ogre. “I hope I can make it, in time.”
Fortunately for him, Max managed to reach the street with the park and the subway’s entrance was just around the corner. “Perfect!” Max exclaimed. He rushed over to the subway entrance.
CRASH!!!!
Something burst out in front of him from the building. Max coughed and covered his eyes from any dust. “You little bastard!” A deep growl sounded out as Grendal emerged from the dust. “You will pay for that, insolent mortal!”
“Great, you again.” Max groaned in annoyance. “What’s wrong, boy?” Grendal asked. “Not so mighty without your friends, are you?” “Really?” Max replied, smirked. “You don’t look so mighty without your servants.”
“GGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!” Grendal roared and charged at him. “Bring it on!” Max roared back and charged as well. Both of them raced at each other, ready to bring the other down. Grendal raised his club and swung it down at Max.
Only for Max to duck down and slide towards his feet. Shocked, Grendal jumped over him, not falling for the same trick twice. However, Max just slid under him and continued to run. “WHAT!” Grendal yelled, before landing and turning around to see Max head into the subway entrance.
“What’s the matter, Grendal?!” Max called out. “Catch me if you can!!” With that, he leapt down into the subway entrance. “COWARD!!!” Grendal roared, chasing after him. “FACE ME!!!!”
(Underground…)
The huge subway was completely empty, due to many of the people under Grendal’s control. The ogre searched the whole subway, silence filled the air. “Come out boy!!” Grendal called out, his voice echoed throughout the subway. “You can’t hide from me forever!!”
SMASH!!!! Grendal swung his club, shattering one of the subway’s pillars. “I am more than just muscle, Wild Guardian.” He continued, walking around the empty subway. “I can hear you. I can smell you.”
“CAN YOU SMELL A ROCK?!” A voice echoed out. Out of nowhere, a rock flew through the air and smacked on Grendal’s face. “Urrgh!” Grendal growled and looked around. “Come out, boy!!” he roared. “Where are you?!”
WHACK!!!! “Arrgh!!” Grendal felt something whack against his legs, making him trip. “What’s the matter, Grenal?” a voice called out. It was Jenny’s. “The girl!” Grendal snarled, getting onto his feet. “That’s right, big guy!” Daniel’s voice emerged.
“So, this was your plan, boy?” Grendal taunted. “Lure me here and have your friends to attack me?” “Yeah.” Mikey’s voice added. “So, it’s lights out for you!” At that very moment, all the lights in the subway shut off, plunging the subway into darkness.
Grendal snorted. “You think the darkness will protect you?” he taunted again. “I am a servant of the darkness itself!!” With that, his club glowed a bright red. “Come on, Wild Guardian!” he called, holding his club out like a torch. “Show yourself!!”
“RIGHT HERE!!!” Grendal turned around to see David leaping toward him and gave him a punch on the face with his charged gauntlet. “AAAAARRRRRGGGGGAAAAHHHHH!!” Grendal roared, flying a few feet before crashing against a wall.
“Why, you little-!!” Grendal cursed as he pulled out of the wall and looked around but discovered that David was gone. “Look where you leap!!” Jenny called out, before jumping above him and whacking him on the head. “Ow!” Grendal howled in pain, clutching his head.
“You miserable humans!!!!” Grendal bellowed. “Come out and face me!!!!” “How about this?!” All of a sudden, someone slashed him on the side, causing him to screech in pain. Immediately, he was slashed all over his body, causing black blood to fly.
Grendal staggered back, slowly toward the railway. “ENOUGH!!!” He bellowed, slamming his club on the ground and sending a shockwave throughout the subway, cracking many of the pillars. “I am through playing around!!!”
“I don’t care where you are!!” he continued to scream, swinging his club and smashing pillars. “Forget about turning you and your friends into zombies! All I wish now is to see you and your friends DEAD!!!!”
“Well, you’re going to be sorely disappointed!!!” Before Grendal knew what happened, he felt some sort of large chain wrap around his neck. “What is this sorcery?!” he roared. “RELEASE ME!!!!”
“Not sorcery!” Mikey replied. “SCIENCE!!!” With that, more chains appeared out nowhere, wrapping around his arms and legs. “CURSE YOU, HUMANS!!!” Grendal roared, struggling to get free.
“It’s rude to curse, you know that.” Max’s voice called out. Grendal looked to see two glowing golden eyes in front of him. “Still, if you think I’ll going to let you get away with this, you’ve got another thing coming.”
The lights came back on to reveal Max standing in front of him and the others, Jenny and Mikey were standing side with Max while David and Jake were the ones holding the chains that bind Grendal.
“YOU!!” Grendal roared, struggling to get a hold at Max. “You think this will hold me?!” “I’ll make sure you and your friends dies for this!!” “Sorry, big guy.” Mikey replied, smugly. “I designed these chains myself.” “You’re not going anywhere.”
Max stepped forward, defiantly. “Besides,” he added. “did you think you’re going to walk away from this?” “Not after what you did.”
He closed his eyes, and all of a sudden, his fox totem necklace glowed brightly. Grendal’s eyes widened in shock when a bright blue aura surrounded him and tattoes appeared on his body. The blue aura suddenly towered over Max, creating images of all sorts of animals.
“You tried to hurt my friends, put innocent people in danger,” he continued, the aura growing stronger. “all that just to get rid of me!!!!” With that, the aura exploded, bathing the entire subway in a bright blue light.
“Impossible?!” Grendal asked. “How is it possible?!” His club was now starting form cracks. “Looks like you’re the one who should be scared.” Jenny explained, smirking “You think just because we’re human, means that we are weak?!” Max demanded. “Well, you’re wrong!”
“You go back and tell your master,” Max continued, lifting his arm and letting aura surround it. “that whatever plan he has, whatever monster he sends after me, my friends and I will FIGHT TILL OUT LAST BREATH!!!!”
“FURY OF ANIMUS!!!!!” With an inhuman roar, Max charged and with all his might, punched Grendal straight in the gut. POW!!!! Grendal spat out some blood and blue aura exploded from behind him.
SMASH!!! All at once, Grendal’s club burst apart due to the blue aura overwhelming it. “NNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!” Grendal howled as the pieces of his club scattered over the floor while Jake and David released the chains, causing him to fall backward and land with a loud THUMP!!! As soon as Grendal’s club was destroyed, all of the zombiefied people were returned back to normal.
“ALRIGHT!!!” David whooped in triumph as he and Jake went to join the others. “We did it!!” “Yeah, son!” Jake added. “That’s what you get for messing with Team W.I.L.D!!!!!” “Your plan worked, Max!” Mikey exclaimed, patting Max on the shoulder “We beat him thanks to you!!”
Max blushed in embarrassment. “You think you won?” Team W.I.L.D turned to see Grendal sprawled on the ground. “This is only just begun.” “When my master hears from this,” he added. “you’re all going to suffer.”
“If he is,” Max replied, bravely. “we’ll be ready for him.” His friends nodded in agreement. Grendal chuckled. “A fool’s wish” he muttered. “The next time we meet, you and your friends won’t be lucky.” With that, he disappeared in a huge cloud of red mist and flew into the dark tunnels of the subway.
The friends stared after him. “So, Max” Jenny asked in concern. “what do we do now?” Max turned to her. “We’ll do what we always do.” He replied in a determined voice. “We’re all going to get stronger, learn new skills and when the time is right, we will beat Mc.Hannibal and the Devourer.”
The others smiled at his words, feeling Max’s wild aura flow through them, giving them strength and confidence. He was right. Whatever danger comes, they would be ready to face whatever comes their way.
