Chapter 67: Friendly Get-Together
The sun rose over the hills and forests, and puffy white clouds dotted the big, blue sky. Max was soaring through the clouds as a bald eagle. His wings spread, outstretched as he flew over the trees.
He looked around the ground below him. So far, he watched all of the forest creatures going about their business; deer were grazing on the sweet green grass, beavers swimming in their pond while mending their dam, wolves running through the woods and squirrels darting through the branches of the trees.
Now, he was heading back to his tree-fort after a long flight. Seeing his tree-fort, he descended gently and shifted back to his human form, landing on the plaza. He was not particularly busy. There were no new patients in his animal clinic, so he had the time to himself.
Still, he couldn’t help but wonder how the others were doing, particularly Jenny and Sophie. Last, he heard, they were grounded for three weeks for fighting in the mall. Needless to say, Max decided to pay them a visit to see how well they were getting along.
“Maybe, I should bring them something,” Max thought to himself. “I hope they’re both doing well.” He sighed as he remembered the incident. His cheeks started to turn red as he also remembered Sophie’s words but he was also confused by Jenny’s reaction. Why would she act like that; she never acted like that before when he first met her, unless...
He shook his head. “No way,” he thought. “Jenny is just a friend, that’s all.” He paused for a moment. “Then again, she has been acting strangely ever since I save Sophie from those shadow creatures.”
Not wanting to think about the past, Max hurried to get dressed and visit Jenny first, but first, he had to call the others.
(5 mins later...)
Max was now in the form of a peregrine falcon and once again, soaring over the houses to Jenny’s home. He found it, a quaint ordinary two-story house with two windows at the front and a front porch just like his. He also found the others arriving at the front porch.
“Hey, guys!” He called as he shifted back into his human form and landed in front of them. “What are you doing here?” “Oh, we all came to visit Jenny” John explained. “We wanted to apologize to her parents because we feel responsible for what happened.”
“Do you think her parents will let us in?” He asked, a little worried. “Don’t worry, Max.” Mikey replied. “Her folks are reasonable; I’m sure they’ll welcome us.” “Besides, I known them ever since I was little.” He added. “So, we’ll be perfectly fine.”
When he knocked at the front door, a middle-aged woman in her early 30’s appeared at the entrance. “Oh, Mikey!” she exclaimed with a wide smile. “It’s good to see you!” “Thanks, Aunt Amy.” he replied. “I’ve brought some of my friends over; we came to see how Jenny’s doing.”
“Oh, I’m afraid she’s still grounded.” Amy explained. “Still, I’m glad you’re here.” She noticed Max among the group. “You must be Max, am I right?” “Yes, how do you know?” Max asked in surprise. Amy smiled. “Oh, Jenny told me so much about you.” she replied. “She told me that you always brought excitement to her life.” “I’m her mother, by the way.” she added.
“Nice to meet you, miss Amy.” Max replied, shaking her hand. “Oh, no need for formalites.” Amy assured him. “You can call me Aunt Amy.” “Well, come on!” she added. “Make yourselves at home.” “Thank you, Miss.” David replied, as the boys entered the house. In the living room, they made themselves comfortable on the sofa.
“Jenny!!” Amy called. “You have visitors, come on down!” She turned to the boys. “Would you like some drinks?” she asked. “Sure, we’ve love to.” John replied. Amy hurried into the kitchen just as Jenny came downstairs.
“Hey, guys!” she called out, surprised. “What are you doing here?” “Well, since you’re grounded,” Mikey replied, grinning widely. “we came to see how you’re getting along.” Jenny smiled. “Thanks, guys.” she said.
She turned to Max. “Max, I’m really sorry for spying on you.” she apologised, bowing her head in shame. “It’s all my fault your date was ruined.” Max smiled gently. “Well, I’m glad to hear that.” He replied. “I just hope this kind of stuff doesn’t happen again.”
“KNOCK! KNOCK!” The door knocked again. The friends turned to the door. “Who could that be?” Jenny asked, before heading over to open the door. To her shock, it was Sophie standing at the door. “What are you doing here?” Jenny asked.
Sophie’s cheeks were bright red. “My parents told me that they would lift my grounding if I came and apologise to you.” she replied, stiffly. “That doesn’t change the fact that you ruined my date with Maxie!” she added.
Jenny sighed. “Well, you want to come inside?” she asked. Sophie thought, twirling a strand of her blond hair with her finger. “Fine.” she replied and walked inside. As she entered into the living room, she was surprised to find the others but her eyes lit up when she saw Max.
“Maxie!!” She squealed, rushing forward and hugging him tightly. Poor Max felt his breath squeezed out of him and his face turn bright red. “I can’t believe you’re here!!” She added, nuzzling him. “I’ve been so lonely without you!!”
“Y-you’re welcome.” Max stammered, his cheeks burning fiercely. The other boys chuckled at seeing Max’s expression. “AHEM...” Max and the other boys changed their tune and turned pale when they saw Jenny, her fists clenched and trembling, her eyes shadowed and a dark purple aura seeping out of her.
Sophie turned to her. “What?” she asked, causally. “I was just saying hi to Max.” This only served to enrage Jenny more. “How about I give you five seconds to get off him before I pull you off...” She said that last part out with such venom that it felt the whole room had gotten colder.
“Who wants orange juice?” Amy called out, coming into the living room; carrying a tray with a pitcher and 6 glasses of orange juice. “Thank you, Miss Amy.” John replied as Amy set the tray on the coffee table. “Oh, Sophie!” She added. Your mother called me a few hours ago; she hoped you would make it up to Jenny for your fight.”
“Of course, Miss Amy” Sophie replied, sitting beside Max. “I’m more than happy to clear up this misunderstanding with Jenny; provided she is willing to accept my apology.” Jenny bristled at that statement but continued to smile and sat right beside Max’s other side. “Don’t worry, mom.” Jenny added. “I’m sure to make sure give Sophie my sincerest apologies.”
Amy nodded, oblivious to the tension between them. “Well, I’m going out to run some errands.” She explained, taking her handbag and purse. “So, I won’t be back in a few hours.” “You kids behave yourselves while I’m gone okay.” she added.
“Sure thing, Aunt Amy” Max replied. “However, there’ll be no T.V, no video games, Jenny; you’re still grounded until you make up with Sophie.” Amy added. “Okay, mom.” Jenny replied, glumly. “Well, then; I’m off!” She called, as she left the house. “See you later!!”
The boys bade farewell to Amy as she left. Little did they know, a small drone was spying on them and had seen Amy leaving the house. “The targets are in sight.” It said. It soon caught sight of both Jenny and Sophie sitting on either side of Max. “The subjects are present; begin Operation: Hive Mind.”
