I don't think this was ever a 'polished' stone, and 300 years of New England weather have taken their toll.

I take it the 'spider' was intended to be a wingèd Death's head.

Yeah. He tended to do the wings as a bunch of curvy lines. Some examples of his work in better condition than this are further back in my gallery.
The yard in Carver, MA, has most of the surviving examples of his work.
