Blood, Silk, and Secrets
Ragnarok was not disappointed by the skill with which Okari's younger cousins, Genma and his sister, Kajitora, fought during their day long training session. The two akita inus were fraternal twins, Genma being older by several minutes and never allowing Kaji to forget that. Kaji, however, with her russet pelt bore the tiger striped brindling of the proudest line of akitas---the tore ge. As the three of them dueled with wooden practice swords and staffs, he was greatly amused by their sibling banter.
"Why must you always dress as a man, Nii-chan?" teased the black marked face of Genma as he gestured to Kaji's hakama and her wrapped chest. "Is it because you failed to inherit mother's assets?"
Kaji had thrust all her rage and power into a single blow, splintering Genma's sword in half. She growled over him like no other female ever could as he laughed. "Why must you always fail as a warrior, baka-kun? Did you fail to inherit FATHER'S assets?"
The black wolf had enjoyed his time in the fields, performing the kata of a warrior with the two budding samurai. He began to realize out in the fields of training men that the House Guards of the Tsukino family were much more than they seemed. Each was a deadly warrior worthy of a find sword. Much more than house guards, indeed. He wondered why they hid their talents under the guise of bumbling house servants.
After his practice was over, when the red sun began to turn the fields to a vermilion expanse of painted brush, he had walked back to the house and asked Jade if he could see Okari, for she had been out all day. Secretly, he feared for her. What could she have had to do that would have forced her to play the part of a man?
Jade shook her head nervously, avoiding eye contact with the wolf. "I am afraid she is asleep right now, Samurai." She bowed low, making an apology that shouldn't have had to be made. "However, she says she will see you this evening, as promised." He nodded and bowed to Jade as he entered the house. Before sliding the door to his room back, he looked across the hall at the shadow of Okari as she slumbered on her futon. After entering his room, he was able to enter the first deep meditation he had experienced in weeks.
Okari feigned sleep, wrestling with rest, and ultimately relived the return from the Aisu house as she lay prone on her bed, her sides aching, her limbs still taut. She had run into rogue samurai who said they were looking for a black wolf with two different colored eyes and strange silver markings...Ragnarok...the defector. She had, to her credit, tried to pass by them, only to have a sword drawn to her white neck. "I don't think you heard us, BOY," the leader had uttered, allowing his blade to drift lower to her bound chest.
She had laughed and warned, "Trust me when I say that you do not want to do this, young Samurai." The men had looked at each other and laughed. Okari vaulted off of her horse's back, and proceeded to fight the lesser warriors with the ghostly shadows of battles past, barely needing to look at them. Red shimmered on the blade her father had passed down to her, her ribs ached from the few good kicks the men had gotten in on her. When all was said and done, she had left only one of the several alive. Walking towards him, she took her hair out of the top knot and stood over him, large lupine paw on his throat as the tip of her katana stared him down with the fierceness of a cobra. "Remember this, servant of the damned, I alone am the keeper of this place. I am the Ghost of Kyoto, and your kind will not be permitted into its lands as long as I wield a blade. Take that message back to your bastard of a master."
When she came home, Jade had seen the struggle in her eyes. Okari had secretly seeped into a medicated bath, soaking for at least two hours before she had gotten up and prayed in front of the shrine a little ways from the house. Once again, she would have to lay down her family name, her place as a woman, to be a warrior. She prayed to her ancestors for forgiveness, she prayed to her father for his strength, to her mother for understanding. After that, she had retired to her room to rest up for the coming night...Ragnarok's first step back onto the Warrior's Path.
Jade informed Ragnarok after supper to go out into the garden where the red bridge was. He didn't ask why, there was no need. Okari had promised to be the one who would truly train him. He waited as the last embers of day died out, he waited still longer as the grey hues of dusk became blue...and even longer as the moon rose overhead, casting shadows and driving out most of the darkness alike. Just when he was sure Okari had forgotten their appointment, he heard a faint sound like a kingfisher diving into a shallow pool. He turned to see Tsukino Okari poised on a large stone lantern, katana already sliding out of it's sheath.
She was clad in the top of a gi, a black silk garment with purple and blue highlights, a strange canine looking dragon racing across the left shoulder and back of the top. He could see her long, lupine legs as she crouched, her dexterous toes gripping the moss on top of her perch. If she had been beautiful before, she was absolutely astonishing now.
"Do I test your patience, Samurai?" she asked, tilting her head before throwing him his sword. HIS sword.
It felt almost foreign in his paws, its weight barely remembered. As if reading his mind, she stared through him with a golden stare as she spoke, "Don't worry, you'll get re accustomed soon enough." With that she lept up into the trees, pink blossoms and green leaves dancing around her. She fought with fierce strikes...jabs so strong that he wondered if she had forgotten that they were fighting with real swords instead of wooden ones. He could not believe the skill and ferocity with which she attacked.
"Samurai," she said as she landed a perfect round kick to his face, knocking him down. "You are going to have to fight me." There was urgency in her voice. "Tonight, I am your adversary, not your friend."
Feeling he had disappointed her, he retaliated, putting all of his training, all of the countless battles, into each strike. They dueled like that for what seemed hours before he jabbed at her with a strike she barely dodged. Horror flooded his eyes as he saw her reach her left hand to her right shoulder and draw back blood. Before she could turn to him, he was on her, holding her tightly to his chest.
"Forgive me, Okari-san," he shuddered as he crushed her into his front. "I would never mean to hurt you...I"
"Okari," she muttered against the cloth of his kimono. "No more formalities. You have proven yourself as an equal. No more "san"." She pulled back and smiled at him, no hint of pain in her eyes.
He smiled at her for a moment, his heart swelling with pride. Slowly, his eyes drifted down to the purple collar of her gi that was now bleeding red, Without hesitation, he removed the shoulder of her top and began licking at the wound. Her collarbones were surprisingly solid despite her lithe frame, and he found himself licking her slowly...more caressing her than tending to her wound.
Okari folded into him, a moan escaping her mouth. She grasped the material of his kimono, pulling hard to steady herself, more from his attentions than from the negligible amount of blood loss. "Ragnarok," she whispered his name and nuzzled deeply into his cheek ruffs. "One day you must tell me your real name."
He drew back regretfully, steadying her with a grip on both arms. "And if I do that, Okari, what will you give me in return?" His eyes were deep and questing, red glowing under the black of his cheeks.
She leaned in and kissed his cheek, pulling back to smirk at him for a moment. "My trade is something you will have to earn, Samurai. For tonight, I will answer your previous question. I am not just a woman of noble birth." She began to walk away from him, cleaning her blade with a white cloth.
Frustrated, he turned to her, hands out to his sides. "Well, I could have guessed that!"
"I'm not finished," she stated simply as she stood up and straightened her back, her face almost white in the moonlight. "I am the daughter of Japan's finest Samurai, I am the heir of Kyoto's greatest Geisha, and I lost all of that in a single night. Now, I am the sole protector of this village, the keeper of the gateway to Kyoto herself. I am neither woman, nor samurai, nor shinobi. I am a ghost. Next time..." she lifted up her forearms and showed the strange bracers she had called restraints a few nights ago..."you will know to which horrible memory I am still bound."

Ah yes, your part would be great for the next part of the storyline. I'll do my trade half after that one is done. This one was just a nice little precursor...and it had been so long since Okari's been able to be...well...Okari. She's most at home in her ninja apparel. I'm so glad you like it.
Well I'm almost done with the sketch. I've been really busy with work but I'm going to try and finish it tonight. I'll send you the ideas for the story write before I post it.
Also is that the dragon from http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2577951/ on her gi?

Hehehe, good eye. Kenshin became much more to Okari than her begrudging travel companion. There's a lot I haven't told anyone about them and about Kenshin in general. I'll note you the basic idea sometime if you'd like!
Ooooo, I'll be glad to see what you have done. I understand completely about work. I was able to do this one in between commission sketches.

I've tried to read back over them and catch a few of the slip ups. Let me know if you see anymore. It's kind of hard to proofread your own work lol!
I'm so glad you like them. They are fun little drabbles to write. I'm sure there are more things that both I and Skyler would like to include in them, but this is kind of an overview of the growing relationship between two very cautious characters. One day, with Skyler's permission, I hope to do a more in depth story that will continue from where this one ends.

Okari is an oooold character of mine that I have been meaning to do something with again. Her world is very alluring, and I love asian themes as well.
I have been trying to move my art in the direction of higher quality. I'm glad it's starting to show. Thanks so much!

Funny, I thought I commented on this. o.o
I bet you didn't know I have a thing for Japanese swords, attire, looks... well... everything! XD so, that's number one...
number 2, the pose along with the background just captures the sense of... serenity? I'm not sure what the word is... but anyway, this is just... wow.
