The Cut of Bitter Truth.
Okari ran the white fingers of her right hand over the healing cut on her right shoulder, her head tilted so that she could stare at it blankly in the mirror, her cotton kimono pulled down so that she could see it. She shuddered as her featherlight touches reminded her of the feeling of steel through flesh, that pleasant burn that made her feel alive after so many years of walking death, and the feeling of his hot tongue on her pulsing wound, his larger body crushed against hers like waves on cliffs. Okari laughed as she realized that no woman in her right mind should be happy to receive a wound, and her thoughts returned to the past she kept carefully buried...perhaps tonight, she would make good on her promise...perhaps she would trade her greatest secret, her greatest pain, for whatever he had to offer.
"Okari-san," spoke the familiar voice of Jade as she bowed in the mirror, Okari's golden eyes suddenly becoming focused again and shifting to the tanuki girl's reflection, "Aisu-san has come for a visit. Shall I invite her in?" Jade bowed, awaiting her master's command.
"That won't be necessary yet, Jade," Okari stated as she shrugged into the right shoulder of the black kimono, turning and strutting towards Jade in her grey hakama, her katana tied at her left side. "I'll greet our old friend."
Jade turned to watch as Okari walked with confidence down the polished wooden halls, barely looking like a woman, but graceful all the same. Long had it been since Tsukino Okari had dressed like a man as routine, and Jade could not help but smile at the new life that seemed to be radiating from her mistress, the Ghost of Kyoto.
"Good morning, Ice Mistress!" called the slate grey wolf girl as she walked out onto the porch. "Your presence honors my house." Okari bowed slightly, smirking at the gorgeous blue lioness who sat in the wagon, her navy hair tied back into a simple ponytail. Kengi, the tiger-wolf samurai, held the reins of a rich brown horse as he sat beside her, returning Okari's smirk.
Tsuki nodded and returned cordially, "As promised, Okari, I have brought you the aid of my most trusted samurai, Kengi, to do with what you will." A protective flame erupted in Tsuki's green eyes, a flame Okari knew was as much unintentional as it was a silent warning. "Now, where is your new friend?" She smiled at Okari, raising an eyebrow, calling the wolf's bluff.
As if summoned by the winds, Okari's two younger akita cousins, Genma and Kajitora came running up to the porch, panting and laughing. They bowed first to their elder cousin, then to the members of the Aisu household.
"Okari-sama," started Kajitora, her white eyedots heavy over her auburn eyes, "You can't continue having us train him...he's too much for us right now!" The tora ge akita panted, her physical exertion making her red pelt that much redder. Genma nodded in agreement, wiping sweat from his brow with a forearm, leaning heavily onto his knees.
Kengi laughed heartily, "And to think, you are both at least eight years my junior!" He looked to Tsuki who gave him both a slight smile and a flash of her eyes as warning before he changed his tone. "So, who is this warrior that tires young beardogs?"
Ragnarok came jogging over the hill, the morning sun casting yellows and oranges onto his perfect black pelt. He laughed and called to his two exercise partners, "Oh come on! Are you already done? It's not even midday!"
No one but Tsuki noticed the change in the stoic figure that was Okari. Her golden eyes widened and met the mismatched blue and green of Ragnarok's, calling him forward. Her curled tail bobbed up and down slightly with his approach, and her smile widened. "Kengi, this is Ragnarok, our resident Nameless Samurai," started Okari, trying to keep her breathing under control as she looked at her handsome wolf guest. "I would like it very much if you would be willing to train with him."
Kengi shrugged and lept off of the wagon, walking around to the back and hauling what little gear he had brought with him onto his shoulder. "Mistress Tsuki says I come, so I come." He walked around to the front of the wagon where he looked into the eyes of the slightly shorter wolf, measuring him up with an icy stare. Ragnarok's resolve did not falter, and Kengi let out an arrogant chuckle as he chucked all of his belongings save for his sword onto the porch. Returning to face the wolf, he grinned and spoke through his large fangs, "So, ookami, shall we begin. I see folly in putting off training that you are in such DIRE need of."
Ragnarok raised an eyebrow and looked to Okari as if to ask for permission. The wolfess extended Tsuki a hand as she helped the smaller female down from the wagon, nodding to her wolf samurai. "I thank you for your help, Kengi," said Ragnarok, bowing slightly. "Where shall we begin?"
In a single move, Kengi's blade was out of its sheath and was slicing the air beside the wolf's head. Ragnarok instinctively ducked and rolled, sweeping his legs under the tigerwolf's, knocking him down for but a brief second...giving him the much needed time to ready his own blade. "Not bad for a dog!" growled Kengi as the sparring match continued, smiling at the chance for a challenge.
"I see why you like him," remarked the blue lioness as she leaned into Okari's shoulder. "He's quite cute. If you like dogs..."
Okari did not take her eyes off of Ragnarok as he spun around with Kengi, back to back, blades dancing like water off of a dragonfly's wings. "I don't know what you're talking about." She felt a firm tension on her hand and turned to see Tsuki's furrowed brow and green stare not but a few inches from her face.
"When are you going to leave the past where it belongs, Ippiki-ookami?" her voice was one of reprimand and caution. "Who knows how many precious days you have left?" Okari's eyes darted about upon hearing that. "He might not even remain here long enough for Kengi's two weeks to end, and you would allow your stubbornness to keep you from opening up to something that could be your saving grace?"
Okari didn't answer with words, but turned to watch the two samurai as they met each other blow for blow, strength for strength, speed for speed. If only it could be that simple. If only words and uttered truths didn't need to be used. She longed for the feeling of the fight, but longed for the touch of his paw too. This was the curse of being the woman who had chosen the path of the warrior. Absentmindedly she rubbed her aching right shoulder since the ache of her heart was one that she could not so easily tend.
